Need a release?

There has been some question on another thread about legality of photographing players at a high school football game without a release.

It was my understanding that it wasn't illegal. Any insight?

As long as you're not using the images for commercial purposes (advertising), you don't need a release.

The school or organization can ask you to put your camera away or leave though.

I had asked a couple of relatively specific question regarding how to handle a transaction on another thread and one of the replies was I needed a release. That had nothing to do with my situation. I just thought I would get a opinion on the release issue before I told him what I thought.
