View Full Version : UDMA speed - worth it for me?

I have recently purchased three Lexar Professional 4GB 300x CF cards that are UDMA capable. My 40D doesn't make use of the UDMA capability however, I purchased these cards because of the outstanding rebate offered by Lexar bringing the price down to $4.00 (no misprint) each and since these cards can be used in the 40D (albeit at a slower speed than in a UDMA capable camera).

Even though the 40D doesn't make use of the UDMA capability, I could purchase a UDMA capable card reader (Lexar Professional UDMA Dual-Slot USB Reader - card reader - Hi-Speed USB) for about $33.43 (USD).

Would the extra transfer speed (I presently use an older PNY Technologies Compact Flash reader) from a UDMA capable reader be worth the change since the 4GIG cards are not really that large and since only 12GB of my memory will be UDMA capable?

put your card in a USB 2.0 reader, copy to computer, go to the bathroom and take a piss, then come back. all your photo in a 4GB should be done copying.

paying an extra $34 for a reader would defeat the purpose of getting a great deal on the CF card.

A 4GB card should copy over pretty quick. You shouldnt need to spend any more money on a UDMA card reader.

My (ancient) CF reader crapped out on my a few weeks ago so I was in the market for a new one. I picked up Lexar's dual slot UDMA reader and I'm quite pleased with it. It's silly fast with a UDMA card. I wouldn't have bought it if my other reader hadn't died though.

Side note-

Where'd you get that deal at on the cards?

That deal is dead but I think B&H might have it for $7.95 after rebate: follow this link (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/553941-REG/Lexar_CF4GB_300_381_4GB_UDMA_300x_CompactFlash.htm l)

Wow, thanks. Twice as much, but still an insane deal. :)

That card reader is $20 after rebate from adorama or B&H. Out of stock at B&H though and adorama has free shipping.
