I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.....at one point I was surrounded by 3 bucks and this doe was hiding behind me...so close I touched her nose..Yikes! This was taken in the early morning fog...

Fantastic capture. As a former bowhunter, I respect the fact that you were able to capture this moment. Bucks definitely look impressive during the rut with their increased muscle mass etc. The fog look adds a neat effect as well. Keep on shooting!

Nice shot, the fog is great with the light just touching plants in the middle and the buck in the background.

Love the framing with the branches, nice effect with the fog and lighting. One of those shots that you know you are lucky to be able to get. Good job.

Awesome shot there 'neums' !!!!! Has a really kind of wild feel to it. Fog and mist always makes any countryside seem/feel/appear very rugged and almost like something out of medievil times. I fully expect to see Robin Hood with his longbow crouched in the background of this shot.....LOL.
Great Shot.

This is a great photo in my opinion. Having the buck in the background, and partially obscured by the fog while the doe is sharp with good contrast gives character to the photo.

Yep hes in rut, look how thick his neck is...wonderful capture...kinda of dangerous to, bucks in that condition have been known to attack people...rare yes, but I remember reading a story (years back) about a photographer that got to close...survived..but the buck isnt thinking straight....(I think all us guys can relate)

This is a phenomenal shot. I love it. The only thing that kinds of bugs me is that the deer are in the center of the picture. Other than that, it definitely ranks in the top 5 shots that i've ever seen.

I thought it might look nice with a vertical crop to cut out some dead space and focus more on your subjects.

As a wildlife photographer (and also a former hunter) I know the patience (and sometimes discomfort) that is involved in getting into the right place at the right time. Then you have to deal with the technicalities of making the shot....
Good work.

The vertical crop edit makes this shot look a lot better. Getting rid of those tree branches does wonders for focusing the eye on the subjects. I did a crop a long time ago on this shot and people seemed to love the branches in the shot, so I deleted my image. BTW It's a very nice image!

Stunning, I mean just flat out great. You must work hard getting this close with only a 70-200, as I can't get anything nearly that close using a 100-400. Do you camo up and wait in a blind for them to get close?

Thanks for the nice comment.....that morning there were 3 bucks after that doe....they were more interested in her than myself...I just kept on walking around them to find a good enough composition and I think I got it.

How do the deer react to the sound of the shutter? How close can you get to them without scaring them off? I have always used P&S cameras that are almost silent. I just picked up an XSi and will be heading into the woods on Friday. Pennsylvania's deer season starts Monday. It would be nice if I could take some pics before I take a shot and really scare them away!

Hi there
never really thought about that.....I don't believe they did anything. The thing is I wasn't hiding, I was talking to them all the time I was shooting so the sound of my camera was the least of my worries. I did get very close but made sure I wasn't in the way. I also walked around slowly and didn't stare at them..I heard if you stare it makes them feel like your a predator.

Actually, I have heard they will run if they are startled and that if they know you are there, they tend to be wary, but not so much scared off. Of course I can see that at a distance, but being right on top of them is a different story. Either way, it worked for you! You have some great results!
