I've been thinging again, sorry. Here is what I wonder about. If I'm shooting say a basketball player running toward the area I'm standing and I press the button, when the focus occurrs there is a slight delay (albeit slight) before the shutter activates. Will the subject be out of focus because of the slight lag?

Set your camera to continuous focus, not one shot.
Next is unfortunately experimentation, but running towards you is easier than running at right angles across your field of view. So you should be ok but you do need to know how your camera is going to react.
One trick is to prefocus at a point and then take the shot as the moving object hits that point, the object should be then in focus but you may get blur from its movement, depending on your shutter speed.
I used a very slow Fuji s304, for a couple of weeks the photo I took, and the photo I got were quite different, in fact I blurred some shots because I did not wait long enough for the camera to do its job, took it away from my eye before it had finished recording :)
I took this shot on that same Fuji

I focused on the cross bar, held it, and took the shot while she was doing her run up, seriously, then held the camera still until she landed.
So a lot of it is about timing and knowing your camera. The 300d should by no means be as slow as that :)

This spec is for the XTi but I don't think it should not be much different than your 300D.
Soft-touch electomangetic release; shutter "lag time" approx. 100 msec.
That should be fast enough for all but speeding bullets.

Thanks guys. I wasn't aware the lag was that short. It seems like forever when your worrying about, ha ha....
That is a relief.
