Okay, because us TPBM'rs tend to bend the rules in the competition thread, this thread is for us :D
This is for general chat and off TPBM topic items. Enjoy!

Edit 07/14/07: For those who may wander by, stop in and say hello :D We are a friendly, albeit odd, bunch and welcome any and all.

Dood! You weren't supposed to see that!

I thought I could do the move in public, but alas, I had a momentary brain cramp so I had to take things into stealth mode for a minute while I straightened it out. Copying/pasting that first post of Miss Terri's always seems to flummox me. I think I've got it now, though.

Hmmmmmm....white snow....black jeep...you will push the dynamic range to the camera to the max....early morning or late afternoon will give you better light....some clouds will help too.

eddarr
8th of November 2008 (Sat), 01:23
Keep an eye on the histogram. It's probably going to look like a deep V. Just try not to clip either side. If you have to err a little to the right. It's easier to recover highlights than shadows. If it's clear skies you will probably blow out some of the whites but it may not be helped.

short5

Expose for the snow also. The camera will try to turn your snow 18% gray. You may need a bit of exposure compensation.

Lovely flower.

No worries. The camera captures 255 shades of light. Because you are taking pictures of a black jeep against white snow you will probably only be using about 20 of those shades. Unfortunately it will be the 10 on the extreme left (blacks) and the 10 on the extreme right (whites).

Additionally the camera tries to make everything 18% grey. Meaning it will try to underexpose the snow by about 1 1/2 stops making it grey rather than white.

The camera can only capture about 5 1/2 stops of exposure. But your scene may have 7 stops due to the extreme black and white subjects. So you will have to cheat a little to get all of the information.

What all that means for you is to expose the image slightly to the right. But don't clip to much of the right or you won't be able to recover the highlights. Try exposing off of the snow then add about 1 1/2 stops and you should be about right.

Sorry I'm behind it took a while to right all this nonsense.

Polarizer definitely if you have bright sunny sky. It will cut down on the glare.

Try shooting in M and set the 1 or 1 1/2 stops to the right when pointing the camera at the snow. That's really all that said.

Really nothing on the table until next spring...I have an offer for a show in NY and one in Orlando...and I am working on getting a local show but no confirmed time frame. I do have a small showing here at home in January...for a couple of local charities.

Good Morning Fine People :D
Glad to see the move went well, good job Chris.

I have to be a construction worker today, I at least need to get all the exterior wiring done as some siding work is going to be done early next week. The stucco and stone work may have to wait until spring, though we keep getting some pretty decent weather for this time of the year.

No worries. The camera captures 255 shades of light. Because you are taking pictures of a black jeep against white snow you will probably only be using about 20 of those shades. Unfortunately it will be the 10 on the extreme left (blacks) and the 10 on the extreme right (whites).

Mornin' Cat! How is the hand today? And how is 18% grey girl? ;)

All is well, really. :D Healed almost completely already. Teeny little scabs, no visible bruising. You'd hardly know anything had happened at all. Sheesh. When something hurts THAT bad, you want VISIBLE proof that it did.

And 18% is fine. Goofy as ever.

I was SO impressed by the vast amount of natural arches in Snow Canyon.
This one is 'Elusive Arch'. It's a tough one to find, and an even tougher one to photograph. But when you have bloodhound instincts like me, you can find anything.
Photographing it took some skill... but I've got that too. So it's all good.

318303

(In reality, this arch was on the ground and the hole was, at most, about 2 inches tall  I'm sure I looked like a dork, and totally had to pull a Boring Boy Bendable move to get it.)

So you moved again, (I knew that last Christmas thread would not last all the way :-) )

Dull overcast day, was looking forward to getting out to take some pictures for the first time in ages but not to be, so I grabbed Teresa's G9 and decided to have a play with some product type shots. I may do some more of these tomorrow as I don't have any pictures of this type of stuff for Insurance purposes.

Becky... what in the world are those plants/flowers/whatever pumpkin looking things in your last shot? SO cool looking!

The balloon looking things are called Japanese Laterns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physalis_alkekengi)and the berry stuff is Bittersweet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanum_dulcamara).

Enjoyed your shots with Lonnie, someday *sigh*. Glad to hear you are on the mend and 18% GreyDog is none the worse for ware.

LOL, no. This is almost embarrassing, these were taken on the dining room table with a window to the front and left of the subject (the window has white vertical blinds that defuse the light nicely).

The black background is an old black velvet coat of Teresas and the white background is the back of a role of Christmas wrapping paper taped to the top of a box. The glass for the reflection is out of a photo frame.

I must be from the "Make do and mend" school of photographers.
