I have two of these living down in the woods behind my house. One is much bigger than the other, so I assume it's a male and female. I'm pretty sure this is a redtail. Can anyone confirm that?

Yes,. Redtail! And this is the time of year that they would be building a nest :)

Yes, most likely a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis). It's paleness suggests maybe the Southwestern subspecies, but often you can't tell without seeing it from different angles.

Thanks folks! I've been enjoying these since last summer when I first started seeing them. I have a pretty good idea of where they're staying, so we're going to do a little exploring to see if we can locate a nest. Unfortunately it's in the same area I have a black squirrel living. I haven't got a chance to capture the squirrel yet. We have some Bald Eagles and Osprey nesting not far from us also. These will give me some good opportunities to try out my 100 - 400 L IS soon.
