Purchased a new desktop tonight that has Vista Home premium. Uploaded some RAW images from my 40D and I can not view them in the Windows Photo Gallery. Went to the Canon site and uploaded the current Codec that allows RAW viewing on Vista and still can not view the RAW inages. I can see them if I open them using Photoshop. Is anyone else having this issue? Is there a updated Codec for for Home Premium? Appreciate any advice!!!!

AIUI the codec should work fine on 32 bit Vista. As I run 64 bit Vista nowadays I know it won't work for me so I have not bothered to try the most recent release, which came out just a few days ago. Before I made the move to 64 bit the older Canon raw codec worked fine under Vista Home Premium.

in XP you had to install the raw viewer powertool, looks like it still works in Vista as well http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D48E808E-B10D-4CE4-A141-5866FD4A3286&displaylang=en

I didn't come up with this. It is a copy/paste from some other website that I e-mailed to myself to never lose.

1. Install the 32bit version of the codec you want. I used the 1.3 version with vista 32bit support(64bit not supported). URL ---> http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0200034303.html
2. Make a 32bit explorer launch shortcut. This will effectivly enable you to use 32bit apps that integate with 32bit versions of windows. Note, this will only enable 32bit windows explorer integrated apps for the ONE windows that is stated!!!! So you have to view your photos and everything from that one windows. Or lauch more 32bit winows from the shotcut. To make the shotcut is easy. Simply right click on a blank space on your desktop. Select 'New' -----> 'Shortcut' -----> Enter the following text '%windir%\SysWOW64\explorer.exe /separate, /root, c:'. Obviously if you want it to open to a different directory than 'C:' you can modify it.
Now your done. To start viewing your CR2 files just lauch a 32bit explorer window with the shortcut and navigate to your photos.

This doesn't work in Vista and hasn't been updated since 2005.

Canon's RAW codec works with Vista 32, but not 64. I run Vista 64 on both of my computers and use Ardfry's Vista 64 Canon codec - works like a charm.

Its a bit annoying in how backward Canon (and Adobe) are to 64 bit operating systems.

Photo editing can REALLY use >3gb of RAM and resources so a 64bit OS makes perfect sense. Despite that Canon are still pretending it doesn't exist and havent released a codec. 64bit OS have been around for years now and most new CPUs are 64bit architecture.

Adobe is even more puzzling, with the release of CS4 with native 64bit compatibility and performance improvements they STILL dont have a working .DNG preview codec so you can view those files in explorer either.

Large companies seem to be very backward in supporting the very type of system you'd expect their users to actually have!

AFAIK there is no fix for the 64 bit... but the 32 bit does have a fix.. Noted above... the next best thing you can do is:
1. shoot jpeg all the time :(
or
2. buy a software like adobe bridge or lightroom and view your files that way... :)

I went with option number two and got photoshop (which comes with bridge)

or 3. Use Canon's Zoombrowser or DPP software, both of which came with your camera and allow viewing and editing of Canon raw files, and basic deleting and drag and drop moving stuff around. The absence of a 64 bit codec hardly seems the end of the world to me, although I admit I'd like a working 64 bit codec too. You certainly don't need to pay for Bridge or Lightroom, unless you want to :)

Its things like windows photo gallery not working that generally annoy me (i prefer it to bridge in that i can select tags and find all photos in indexed folders whereas bridge only does current one). Quick browse in explorer as well is handy.

I am using RAW with VISTA 64 bit using both CS3 and CS4.

CS3 is only 32 bit and is limited to RAM that can be used. CS4 has a 64 bit version that works fine and utilzes as much RAM as I want to allow.

I see no thumbnails with VISTA 64 bit so I always use Adobe Bridge. Canon also provides EOS Digital Software version 15.1 that works with RAW files and Vist 64 bit.

CR2 CODEC for Windows Vista x64 (http://www.ardfry.com/cr2-codec/)

It's $19.95 though.

interesting discussionas I plan to got to 64 bit vista next year. Question as I am waiting to get cs4 using the trial right now. I did not see a choice for a 64 bit operating system when I bought it. Is there a separate program or is 64 bit support built in?
