View Full Version : Contest #22: Double Take

All,

The contests seem to have run into the ground somewhat. Tommy has been instrumental in sorting out some ideas for a new structure for the contests (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56810 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56810)), however it sounds like these may take a while to get up and running. To make sure everything keeps a sense of momentum, it would be really great to keep the contests going until something better can be arranged. Therefore the below proposals are simply an interim measure. While I want to kick things off, I don’t want to dictate to everyone how we should run thing in the future.

I propose that we have a contest very much on the previous lines, but with polls for voting, rather then a manual system. It should just make it a little easier to manage. If everyone is happy I don’t mind running this first one and we can revert to the winner manages system afterwards.

I have deliberately posted this in the Talk about Photography section. I know this isn’t entirely appropriate, but it should give the contest much more exposure then the ‘Other’ category did previously. Ideally, I think we should have a ‘contest’ forum. Pekka, would you be happy to create one for us?

As I say, I’m not trying to dictate to everyone, just to get things going, while we decide on a better long-term structure for the contests.

So here’s the topic:

“Double Take”

As per usual, you may submit up to two photos for this competition.

SEND PHOTOS TO: sam dot blackie at gmail dot com

Note: Please allow up to 48 hours for your photo to post. If it is not posted within this time frame please send me a note via this forum.

TITLE All e-mails "Double Take." If the e-mail subject is not titled as such, I will not open the attachment and you will not be entered into the contest!

Please submit photos in the format "username_0x.jpg", where x is the number of the submission (i.e. 1 or 2).

Please submit a TITLE with your picture along with the DATE it was taken, and SPEED/APERTURE/ISO.

Additionally a brief explanation if needed to emphasise how this photo meets the theme.

Anyone can enter this contest. It is not so much we have these in the spirit of competition, rather we have these contests to challenge ourselves and to give ourselves motivation to take pictures that we might otherwise not do. And in turn learn and grow.

RULES

1) The contest will run for two weeks and will end on Sunday 13th March, 2005 at 8:00AM GMT.

2) You can submit up to two pictures, and change these if you wish up to the time that the competition ends.

3) Photographs must be taken by you during the two-week period of the contest.

4) Post processing - nothing that substantially changes the original composition of the image.

5) Photos must be no larger than 800 pixels at the longest dimension. Also, please try and keep the filesize down to under 300k if possible to make viewing the gallery easier for modem users.

6) No framing of pictures, text or copyright notices.

7) At the end of the competition, a separate thread will be started to seek the votes of forum members over the period of 1 week. The person with the most votes will be declared the winner.

Please be patient with me if it takes one or two days for me to get submissions posted.

Finally, please ensure that you have read this post fully and understand the rules prior to sending.

Hi Big_B !
I can't see any gallery for this contest in the URL you provided - or is it just me ?

Well spotted, I was kinda hoping to get that fixed before anyone noticed ;)

Unfortunatly I don't know the passwords or anything so I can't set one up at the moment. I've emailed one of the former contest managers for them, but can't do anything until he replies. In the mean time, if anyone else knows them, please just send me a PM.

Looking forward to seeing all your great photos!

:D

Just sent a PM to B_B, but not sure it will help him.

Btw, what does “Double Take” means, would appreciate any explanation.

I think the topics of the contest, are meant for your own interpretations ( or the voter's interpretations for that matter ).

Thanks KB,

I really don't know what “Double Take” means in English (my 1st language is not English). Does it mean double exposure.

My interpreation is probally going to be that double attempt at the shot, a pair or two. Kind of hard to describe at the moment, but english being my native language, I didnt think of double exposure, least not til you said it.

Double exposure is my current favorite type of pictures - I like this contest !

A double-take is when you look at something at something as you turn past it, then realise and turn back to look again.

But for the contest it's probably anything around the double theme.

The title was deliberately chosen to be slightly ambiguous. That should allow plenty of creativity in the way you interpret it. However, since you ask, here are a few of the things that I was thinking of when I came up with the title:
- Double exposure
- Reflections
- Two items
- Looking at something and then taking a second look to make sure.

If anyone has an idea that they are not sure of, please feel free to post it here or to send me a PM.

Cheers,

On another contest thread, someone mentioned that they had previously been discouraged from entering because they worried that, should they win, they would need to be resonsible for running the next contest. I am addressing the question here to try and contain the discussion within one thread.

Is this a problem that others have? If so, I would be very happy to organise the next couple of competitions until we can implement the Exibit Engine option. I’m looking to you all for guidance on this.

The person with the most votes will be declared the winner and will also be expected to choose the topic for the next competition and carry out the administration of same.

Not that I at all think that I would win...but if one were to win, how would one do this?

I assume that "carrying out the administration" would mean posting all the photo's to the contest site. I've only built one site (my own), is posting the images a difficult job?

please excuse my naive question. :)

I entered once . . . the experience was 'difficult' in someways. I would love to try again, however I am doing well to type this, i.e. be online at all. Thus I would NOT like to be the admin, were I luck enough to win such a thing. So I suppose we do have those whom wish to and those whom wish not . . .

If there are others like me in this regard having someone like Moppie to do the duties would be nice and may increase participation, from those who fear they might or could win. Perhaps in time I could learn this . . . who knows.

Well it appears Im not the only one prepared to take on the task, Big_B plus Wazza plus me equals three alternates.

I think anyone scared of entering because they don't want the responsiblity of winning can safely put thier fear aside :)

I agree moppie! :D

I've changed the rules so that the winner does NOT need to take over the admin responsibilities.

I'm sure that Moppie, myself et al can get something arranged between us. If anyone apart from Moppie and Wazza is interested in running it, could they please send me a PM. I'm on a course for the next two days, but will try to reply when I can.

.... and we have a third contender! :D

Before submitting please make sure that you have read all the rules. I have already had to send back two photos because they didn't comply. Thanks for your understanding.

Ah. LOL. I didn't directly say I would host one. I could certainly take some responsibility with winning.. Can I just take a self-portrait? I've been told I have a split personality. I'm not sure who I am right now.

ha ha! Seriously though, if the concept isn't obvious, simply include a little text explaining your idea. The voters can decide if you are correct :D ;)

One week to go......

Another is online!

Another two are online! Keep them coming, you have until sunday to submit your photos! :D

Just a reminder, please make sure you have read the rules before submitting your photos (they are on the first page of this thread). Sadly, today I have had to turn down three great photos because they did not comply. The rule that seems to be causing the most confusion is:

3) Photographs must be taken by you during the two-week period of the contest.

We have this rule to encourage people to go out and shoot photos that they might not have done otherwise.

Cheers,

BB
