I captured this fellow today. I think it is a little soft, taken with a 75-300mm from about 30 metres away. I need to invest in some L glass.

Good catch! Agreed, it is a bit soft. Don't be too quick to knock the 75-300. We can't all afford L glass (although I think Canon should give every member of this forum a significant discount!:D ). The 75-300 is capable of taking good sharp photos, provided there's enough light (which there seems to be in your shot) and you make sure of your focus point. It looks to me (and I'm no expert) like your focus might be a bit short on this shot. Did you use AF, or manual? Also, did you do any post processing on this? Also, I would crop a bit from the top of this.

Very nice shot. One thing you can do to take away some of the softness, is after you resize it for posting do a little USM in photo shop or PSP and that tends to punch it up a little.
