I have a shoot of high school hockey players. I have the image in my mind but cant seem to come up with a good plan. I want to put the players on the ice in the red circle. I want to smoke behind them. I want the smoke to be back lit but be the only thing in the lit in the background (Maybe the glass too??). Then probably hard light the players with just one light from the front. Has anyone done this? What is the best way to balance all the light out? Any advise anyone has would be great.

Sounds like fun. I would try to keep the shutter relatively high to block out the ambient light, Have one hard light on the ground behind them in the smoke probably 1/2 stop brighter then the overall exposure. I would then have 2 lights on stands with large softboxes producing a flat light in front. If they have shiny helmets I may throw a hard light edge light their helmets to give a little highlight.
Probably need a pretty hefty smoke machine to get a background in such a large area.

Light on the players, light on the smoke from behind but make sure the strobe isn't in the frame.
