The green box is completely automatic mode, the camera sets everything for you - exposure, flash, WB, AF point selection. In P mode the user has more control options - he can alter the aperture / shutter speed combination, set the AF point, set WB, enable / disable flash etc.

In the completely automatic (Green Box) mode, the camera gives you no choice at all for shutter or aperture.
In P mode, it gives you several different choices for shutter and aperture. Each choice will give you the same overall exposure, but you may choose one or the other depending on what you are trying to do with depth of field.

Not quite:
In addition to being able to set WB, ISO, Av/Tv, FEC and AF points, you can't shoot RAW in Full auto, but you can in Prog-Auto.
Personally I would never use Full-Auto mode except for outdoor snapshots (if at all). For indoor flash photography I would start by using Prog-Auto because with it you can use FEC (flash exposure compensation) which is often required. However, once you get to learn you camera, I feel Man is the only way to go for flash photography. Note: You have to manually pop-up the on-board flash if you need to use it in Prog-Auto, or any of the other creative zone modes.
Also, for some outdoor photography (i.e., snow scenes), it will be impossible to get decent pictures without being able to shift the program, and you can't do this in Full-Auto. However for outdoors shots where the light meter isn't fooled by a lot of reflective surfaces Full-Auto will work just fine.
I hope this helped!

This is true for some cameras and not for others. The original poster only asked about the 10D, but the old D60 would allow RAW shooting and those other settings in any exposure mode.

I'm confused, you have a 10D and a 1D MK II.
Have you progressed from the 10D to the 1D MK II or did you buy both cameras at the same time ?

No,. the 1D MkII has no "green Box Mode"
You can use a "P" mode though,. which offers the program AE
