I recently became an uncle again and was asked to take some pictures of my two week old niece. Here are a few pictures I took. But I'm not overly happy with the clarity and sharpness in the eyes. Can someone give me some pointers on how to make my pictures really sharp and crisp please?
Anyway here's a few pictures I did take and would love some feedback and comments on how to take better pics.
Thanks

First off, congratulations! Second, the third shot is just precious. It's noisy and dark and you had a LOT of room to vary your settings (you shot this at 1/30, f22 and ISO400) -- and it's still a nice shot. I'd definitely lighten it a bit and run it through a noise reduction filter. The first two don't appear to have the focus clearly on her eyes -- in the first one it looks like it could be on her lip, in the second perhaps on her belly. More light would help a LOT in these shots.

First you need to increase your depth of field a little. Back up from your subject or change your aperture to bigger number...try 5.6 or even 8.0 to get all of your subject in focus.
Here I added a little light and sharpened her eyes and mouth a tad.
She is a cutie..congrats!!

That looks a lot better. Thanks.
I don't have a studio, these where taken with a black sheet drapped over the wall and my flash bounced off the ceiling. I had my camera in Tv mode and used 1/30 so that the background wasn't exposed.
So what I think I need to be doing is moving the subject further away from the background and decreasing the shutter speed. or switching to M.
My neice is over 100 miles away. so I'll try something later at home and be ready for the next time I visit.
Thanks for the advice. :)

Newborns' eyes are usually a dark gray for the first few weeks. Our 4 week old is just now getting some blue to her eyes. As far as sharpness, you can always do some USM (unsharpen masking) in your photo editor.

Thanks Guys :), Glad you liked them, I know the parents were really happy, and even wanted some of the pictures I would have scrapped.

I never realised that about gray eye's. I was too busy looking through the lens to notice. LOL
