I am soooo amateur when it comes to Photoshop. I've been an elements girl. But I decided to upgrade and give PS a chance. But I think I got hustled. I bought what I thought was going to be PS CS3 off eBay. It still may be. Heck, I don't know. Here's my question... when you first open PS CS3, in the top left hand corner of the screen is it supposed to say ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS3 EXTENDED?

Do I have the right software?

If so... please, please, PLEASE tell me where I can go to learn it!

My CS3 extended says ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS3 EXTENDED on the splash screen and also on the top. Do you have the analysis menu between filter and view. I think that is only in extended but and not sure if it really is exclusive. Also under layer - smart object you should see stack mode, to see this you will need a multi layered smart object file open. That is only in extended (BTW this is very useful to photography you can have several frames of a scene and make all the people vanish for example).

Crap - yes I have the analysis and the stack mode. So does that mean I have the extended version?
But the box it came in and the cd say PS CS3. Not the extended version box. But then again I did buy it off of ebay. So pretty much I still need the original version as well right? Other than ebay, where can I get one? Adobe has CS4 up now.

The Extended version is higher on the food chain than CS3 standard. Extended adds a few more features.

No you don't need the orig as well...

Extended isn't an "add on", if that's what you are thinking. CS3 standard and CS3 extended are sorta like XP home and XP Pro.

Now that you are happy and not sad about your version of photoshop you will want to learn photoshop. I have a couple of good books at home but will not be back for a couple of months and I cannot remember the authors names. I would suggest you get one or two good books. Don't get many or you will never remember which book you saw something in (maybe you will not have this problem but I do). A basic starter would be Scot Kelby's book I think called Photoshop for Photographers it gets you started in a simple direct way. After that find a good more in depth one. You could also join NAPP (National Association for Photoshop Professionals) and read their journal.

Some people do not learn well from books if you are like that you may try to find a class in photoshop or even just learn by playing with the program. Depends on what sort of learner you are.

QUAD - love your name. I actually had a set of quadruplets.
Yes happy doesn't even begin to express! Just like mentioned above, I thought I had an add on and it couldn't be used without the other. Imagine my surprise! I stayed up soo late last night trying to figure things out. I got the hang of some things but I need help with one. How do you get the effect where the picture is in black & white but maybe one item remains in color? Like a shirt or bow. I have the cutest picture of my kids holding these big swirly lollipops and would love to do that to the picture.

Thanks for all your help guys. You made my day!

You do realise you probably have an illegal copy of the software? ;)

Really? But it looks so authentic. It has the box, the tutorial cd, the cardboard box packaging. And it was sealed. Although it does strike me strange that everything reads CS3 and the extended version pops up. I wouldn't doubt it. Hello - eBay.

Quadruplets, that must have been real tough. Photoshop is a very deep program, it is worth learning well. Things that took days in the darkroom with internegs and all sorts of process and time can now be done in a few minutes. Plus it is easily repeatable.

There are a couple of ways to do selective colouring but you can turn it all to black and white select what you want to be colour and use the history brush on that part. Before photoshop you made a B&W print and used coloured pencils or oils on the print.

OK so not everything on ebay is fake then :)
