Well, I was not going to do it, but finally sent in my 20D grip for the fix. And then on Tuesday I get an email from Canon that it was going to cost me $50 to fix it!
Yup. I was livid. I was on my way out of town on business and could not deal with it so my wife sent them an email.
They promptly replied back that it was a mistake and would be retro'd at no cost. It shipped 2-day from Canon Irvine on Friday.
I'll report tomorrow or Tuesday depending when UPS delivers it. It's in the local area as of yesterday, so I might get it tomorrow.

What does the fix involve ?

Installing a couple of washers or something along those lines and extending the contacts so it doesn't flex and/or lose contact. I could grab mine and pull down without a ton of effort on the side that plugs into the camera and it would lose contact. Not good when using large glass!
I did the gaffing-tape fix on it and that worked fine, but the fix is free so I figured let Canon have at it. We'll see when I get it back.

Tell us if there is this red dot sticker on it when it comes back (presumed to be the distinctive sign for a fixed grip, don't remember where I read that) ;)

It sounds like my last visit to Canon:
- Canon clam that the brand new 1DSMKII's sensor (fungus and scratch between the AA filter and the sensor) that I have last than 14 days was caused my me. And want to charge me an arm and a leg to repair it.
- They won't back down, until I show them the first picture that I took with that camera and couple hours argument.
- Plus took them 2 days to figure out that they should replace the defected 1DSMKII with a new one.

I've just received my 20D grip back from Canon's UK service centre where I had sent it in when the locking wheel broke which meant I was unable to remove the grip. I sent a letter along with it not only explaining the obvious problem but also the much reported flex problem of which I had experienced with my grip (although only slightly). On Canons repair report it states that they replaced the locking wheel but made no mention of 'fixing' the flex problem, however now when I try and pull down on the grip it is rock solid, no movement whatsoever! I've had a close look at the grip and can't notice any visable differences and no red sticker?
