I'm not sure if I am going to keep the lens or exchange it for a Canon 17-40mm f/4L, I was a little disappointed with the pictures. I shot most of them with the horizon in the middle of the shot to help eliminate some of the distortions at the edges and in the corners. I figured that I would crop the top or bottom third in PS to create a more panoramic feel.
Anyways, here are some shots that I took:

Here is a shot from my balcony and you can see how the cars in the lower left corner are elongated:

I know that I need a lot more practice with such a wide-angle lens before I make my final decision. Only 29 days left to decide

Those are sweeping vistas . . . I have thought to buy this lens. I have the 17-85 and don't think I would trade it for the 17-40. Get used to it before you dispose of it. All tools have a get aquatinted period.

I'm in much the same situation as yourself having just sold my 17-40L to go with the 10-22. As yet I've had very little chance to use it (I've posted some examples on an earlier thread if you wish to take a look). I know it's going to take a fair bit of trial and error to get the best from this lens but my first impressions are good and I'm going to stick with it!
Nice shots by the way, number 2 is a lovely shot!

If you don't want it I'll be in Southern California next month.................I thought all the cars in California were "long".

My 10-22 is on the way, so I'm concerned about your disappointment. However, your shots ( and Paul's) look darn good to me, except for the long cars. Thankfully, I don't shoot cars very often. LOL

There's a few good shots there, but a couple are tipping to the right. I guess you just have to pay more attention when you are composing.

Took some more shots tonight and I can see the benefit of this lens for the professional photographer, but I'm not sure if it is right for me. If I was selling my pictures, then it would be a great lens. I just don't see myself printing enough large prints to make the lens worthwhile. 4x6 prints just don't do the shots justice and there are only so many 20x30 prints that I can make. So far, all of my favorite shots with this lens seem to be at the 22mm focal length and the 17-40 f/4L would work just fine.
Here are two shots from the same location:

Thoughts from other 10-22mm owners?

I just ordered a 10-22... I HAD the 17-4L, the reason for the switch,... is because 17-40L IS NOT WIDE! I have a 20D, if i was shooting film, then i would have kept the 17-40L.
All that distortion is just part of the ballgame of shoot with a wide angle. Keep in mind, this lens is build to L glass standards, AND its better than the Tamron and Sigma versions. I saw the Tokina with WAYYY more CA around the corners.
I have bought the canon 10-22 because it was engineered to work well with my 20D. I dont think im going to have any regrets, I have taken some sample test shots, but i am waiting on my copy to arrive from Dell.com (I paied $710.18 shipped to my door)

Guys,
I had the same concerns you are having before I bought my 10-22, but I figured I could sell it for what I paid for it, so I took the risk.
I am glad I did and will be keeping it. :D
I agree with Sydor25 in that a lot of images that you shoot with this lens are destined to be printed large. We have an A4 colour photocopier/printer in our office and I printed some of my last 10mm shots out and they look spectacular. Seriously. I am REAL impressed. Everyone I have shown these to are glowing in their praises. Now, some of it's me, some of it's the great country I visit, some of it's the camera and some of it's the lens. What proportion of each, who knows? ;)
I will post one sample here, but others are in my most recent Pbase galleries.
This shot doesn't look great in portrait on a 20" computer screen, but looks AWESOME printed out in A3. I will definately be getting it printed at 20"x30":

I am very happy with my 10-22. These sweeping landscapes make it very worthwhile to me, and the quality is great.
