Went back out to the owls this afternoon. It was bitterly cold so didn't hang around too long. There is one area where most people go. There was an awful lot of license plates from out of province. Alot of high priced gear there as well. There were even a couple of videographers there today.

No flight shots today but here is a full sized shot.

Beautiful shot of the owl. Another great one for you. The big lenses... Ooooh well. I think you are doing absolutely great with your images. Mostly I just wish I could get some wild owl shots like this. ??? I wonder, will the flash on the camera in pic 1 actually provide any value for fill flash and if so at what distance???

Br-r-r-r-r. I got a chill just looking at those photos. Maybe it was all the snow. Or could it have been looking at all those BIG lenses on the wimberly. BTW, another great GGO you got there!:p

Never saw any baiting this weekend. It could be that just about all of the pet stores in the vicinity have quit selling rodents to anyone except for those they know personally.

That one guy in the first photo, does he really think he needs the flash

I was shooting at about 800th at f7.1 at this time. I could only surmise that he had it setup for later. Even at that he was probably a good 75 feet from the bird and without a beemer I doubt it would do much in any event.

the flash will cause the eyes to 'pop' ... brings a dull animal to life. called catch-light if I remember right. serves no other purpose

More good stuff. Do the owls leave soon? Or do the live there year round?

Giggle, giggle. While these guys and Sheldon were doing the frozen digit thing, I was basking in the warmth of sunny Vancouver (+ 14C:))
Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to taken any shots:( but I was warm for 3 days.
However, I am now back home in Montreal and freezing to death:(
I will be back out there this weekend chasing the Greys, again.:)
Man, those guys look cold.

Wonderfull portrait of the owl :)

As for the gear,. yep,. I'd love a long lens like that. The Dude with the Flash is kinda funny because his tripod and head cost about the same as his lens.. $700.00 Gitzo with a Full wimberly @ $500.00 or so...

Then there's the XL ... I want ONE! If only so I can attach it to my 500mm with the optional EF adapter! I've estimated the "crop factor" to be about 6X!!!!!!! thus on a 500mm with the XL you get about 3,000mm "effective"

The mountain goats/sheep up high and the critters one can not sneak up on . . . all require a western size lens. This might just fit the bill. You should see the folks look at the weld marks on my 100-400 IS L that we hooked the 1.4 TC up to. <grinn>
