These are all hand held in full manual mode. Not perfect focus but they let me get closer today. I think it was because they were juveniles. C and C always welcomed and thanks for looking.

I love the super closeup. The colors in all from the flowers are very nice.

Thanks Lawrence. I think that one looks the best too. But I am more amazed I got the "in flight shots" in semi focus at F11. I have a hard enough time getting things in focus that are not moving at all.

Did well to get the HIF shots, however I reckon the third shot is stunning. Great shot.

They are all great shots - you did well with the in-flight shots, but I think #3 is the best - it has great detail :-)
I think I would have tended to lighten the images a little in post processing, with possibly the shadows and highlights option to lift the darkness a bit, but apart from that, they are very good.

Linda, I don't post process any of my pics other than sharpen or crop. I don't like to crop but I am still learning so I have to sometimes. I shoot as Jpegs and need to ween myself off and start shooting in RAW and learn to use Photoshop. I am still just learning how to use a camera, so I will start shooting in RAW soon. Thank you so much for the advice on highlights and lifting the darkness. If no one tells me anything, I will never know.
Thanks everyone for looking and the nice feedback!

pretty sharp for flight shots - attractive pattern on that species.

Hi again - well if its any comfort, I do very little post processing either, I like mine as natural as possible and literally do the same as you plus adjust the shadows and highlights if I need to. Doing that is sooo simple, nothing complicated about it, but do it before you sharpen (sharpen should be your last move before saving your pic). Just go up to image, look at the drop down list and you should see it there (I have Elements 6 but I guess its in a similar place in PS).
Dont knock shooting in jpeg - I still do all of mine that way, even though many insist that raw is the way to go. Raw is obviously the best, but when you can get pretty good jpegs why change? I have played with raw once or twice but to be honest I couldnt see much difference, so I didnt bother. You are getting excellent results already so you might want to experiment with raw soon, but to me, its not the be all and end of of a good end result in a photo. Here is a link to my hoverfly gallery if you fancy taking a browse - I think for jpegs they are ok, the only bad ones are my fault for not getting things sharp

Do have a look in the menus though for the options for lightening or darkening an image, it will make a vast difference to your shots. It can also be adjusted in the Brightness/Contrast area but I really like the Shadows & Highlights bit best as you have more control over how much to alter it one way or the other.
You are doing really well :D

Thanks so much for all of the help and kind words. After I learn more about my camera and especially the lighting, I will move up to RAW and start to really edit my pictures.
I just looked at your gallery and you have some very wonderful shots! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments. I wish I was in Costa Rica 365 24/7. Things here in the U.S.A. are coming to a halt. Winter is approaching us. Look forward to your pics with your new setup!
