Hi all,

The wife and I are moving from AZ to just North of the Cincinnati metro area. Is there an active group in the area?

Please let me know as I've sure enjoyed the POTN group here in Phoenix!

Thanks.

I don't know about a group but you do know it's cold up here don't you? We have about the same weather as Cincinnati and right now it's 50 degrees, raining a the weatherman says it feels like 40 degrees out.......
Good luck with the move.

Yes, I'm quite aware of the weather. It's much milder, warmer and less windy than where I'm from (the upper plains-think SW Minnesota/SE South Dakota/NW Iowa). :D

Looking forward to getting away from the heat of AZ. :)

Oh Yea, it's not near as cold as the Minnesota/South Dakota/Iowa area nor is it as hot as Arizona. My Sister lives outside of Benson Arizona so I know a little about the hot weather out there.
There's lots of good place around Dayton (my home town for 60yrs) and Cincinnati to take pictures.. I hope your move goes smooth and welcome back to the cold weather.

Cincinnati has a great photographic community. David Ziser, a top wedding shooter is based there. They have a pretty active strobist group as well.

Wow, great info Matt-Thanks! I'll definitely look into that. Very much looking forward to some new scenery to photograph and maybe try some architecture eventually-a lot of beautiful structures out that way! I'm open to learning more about all areas of photography (just been limited since going digital with only the one lens so far). Budget should be getting better soon :).

Scott, I'm in the northern area of Cincinnati too. A bit further east of you in Mason. Let me know if you find someplace welcoming for a n00b like myself. And well, if there isn't a group around here, we could always make our own. :D

Hey guys,

I'm also in Cinci. Pretty close to pennypue in fact, near Indian Hill :)

Count me in for any meetups!!

pennypue

I think we should try to plan something for either the Riverwalk down in Newport or perhaps the Krohn Conservatory. (That way we'd get to stay warm :D)

We could plan it, and if no one shows up but us, well, then good for us. Decision making becomes very easy. :P

Or, since we're both in the northeastern area, we could hit my favorite haunt, the Little Miami Bike Trail. There's some great views on the trail to shoot I'm just always riding past them!!

Hey pennypue and radlux!

Sorry, was out of town for Christmas (to the cold North!). I'm definitely interested in meeting for some photo-fun. Since I'm completely new to the area-I'm game for anything!

Give it a year or so and I'll bet you'll be ready for that phoenix heat again. Cincinnati's humidity is really something to get used to. I spent a summer working in St.George , UT and 110 deg there was no match for 90 deg here.
Other then that Cinci's a great town to live in. Welcome!

Cold of northern Ohio? I was just up in Strongsville yesterday and the weather was stunning. Kills me that I can get out and ride my bicycles. (Recovery from surgery and then visiting family!)

Columbus isn't too far away either.

Lots of great places to shoot in ohio!

Hi Mayerk,

No, the weather won't get to me :). I'm fine up to 100F and very high humidity (Key West/Miami/Houston type). Thanks for the welcome! I'm feeling like I'm back home in the upper plains with the great people here which I sorely missed while living in AZ.

pennypue: I was back in extreme NW Iowa and SE South Dakota for Christmas. Hey, it was above zero which is more than can be asked for this time of year-and we were missing the high winds which are the norm :). We drove in last night about 23:30 and it was still 63F here. Today is below average but still very nice to me.

Can't wait to do some exploring with the camera!

I'm from the Cincinnati area as well, I don't know of any particular groups - other than those related to trains - but I'm sure there are some out there.

As for NW Iowa and SE S.Dakota....brrrrrrrrr, that's some bonechilling cold even when they're above 'normal'. hehe

Welcome back home.

What do you like to shoot? I'm a lousy shot but sometimes, occasionally, I have good ideas. :)

mayerk

Head over to Newport, Ky. and get some shots of the skyline, Devou park is nice too. Fountain square downtown is another. Those are pretty generic spots, I think everyone into photography in Cincinnati has shot there at one point or another but it's a good place to get started.

pennypue: I love architecture but have limited experience (so needing to learn more there). My main focus (pardon the pun) has been nature and landscapes while I lived in AZ. I have tried a bit on abstract objects but my composition is always needing work. Check out some of my shots by clicking on my user name and dropping down to my homepage.

mayerk: thanks! That gives me a few places to start :)

mattograph: have you been to one of their seminars? I have CS2 and haven't even tried LR.

pennypue
31st of December 2008 (Wed), 09:45
Yeah, I stalked you....on your galleries. :D That's why I suggested Krohn Conservatory. That and it's indoors and warm!!!

Mattograph, thanks for the link. I was totally clueless...and I think it would be waaay above my head. Although I do want to get LR2, I need a new puter for running. I don't have enough space left on my hard drive to load it. :(

Wow. There are a alot more POTNer's in the area than when I joined the forum a couple of years ago. I'd be up for a meet. I'm on the east side of CIncy. Mt Lookout to be exact, over by Lunken airport.

radlux

Wow.. I completely forgot about this thread and I chanced upon it again today and there's been so much activity !! If you're willing to drive a bit and are into landscape photography one place I liked was Hocking Hills State Park. I think its around 150 miles from Cinci though. This is great there are so many POTNers in Cinci. Who knew!

pennypue
3rd of January 2009 (Sat), 09:50
Hocking Hills is also great for rappelling!

How many people would be up for a trip during the week? I was thinking of heading out next week to Krohn and maybe the River Walk or Devou.......I need to get out and shoot or I'm never going to get any good!

mattograph

mattograph: have you been to one of their seminars? I have CS2 and haven't even tried LR.

I have not. I do use kelby training, and have watched their podcasts. The "stars" are a little goofy, but the info is spot on, and its always presented in a way that you can digest it, regardless of skill level.

ScottDR
3rd of January 2009 (Sat), 10:28
Since we are now gaining ground on numbers, let's go out somewhere! Later we can figure out a way to maybe carpool to Hocking Hills SP. But for now let's start with something more local. If we end up having any group outtings at all, I think we will really have started something great. There is nothing like getting a group of people together with the same interest.

I'll start off by throwing this out there, who can make it out Saturday January 10th at 8AM for the early light? You have helped with many suggestions in the area, so let's try and pick a fairly central location.

I've used Kelby as well. I gained a ton of knowledge in PS from them and it was well worth the money spent. Check your PM's :).

I can't do the 10th or 11th because thats my weekend to work (we rotate weekend duty, so we work a weekend about every 6 weeks). Any other weekend from January 17th thru February 7th works for me, but I guess this would be a majority rules kind of thing.

Since we are now gaining ground on numbers, let's go out somewhere! Later we can figure out a way to maybe carpool to Hocking Hills SP. But for now let's start with something more local. ScottDR
4th of January 2009 (Sun), 22:42
Ok then, let's plan on the 17th as mattograph couldn't make the 10th either. Who's all in? What central location could we meet?

Pyromaniac
4th of January 2009 (Sun), 23:30
I'm in.

Where is every one else located and does any one have any ideas about where/what we what to shot? Once we figure those out figuring out a meeting spot should be easy. I live on the east side of town in Mt Lookout.

There's a really good coffee shop (Lookout Joe (http://www.lookoutjoe.com/)) up the street from me that would make a good meeting spot if anyone is interested. Also if anyone whats to carpool I have a Chevy Trailbalzer so I can carry three others comfortably plus lots of gear.

I won't be able to make the 17th, baby shower in Dayton. :(

ScottDR
5th of January 2009 (Mon), 22:33
Sorry you can't make it Penny.

I'm on the Hamilton/Fairfield township line. I drive a Civic sedan and am all about carpooling :).

The fountains or Devou sound great to me for a group outing since I'm new to the area. Which would be better this time of year?

mayerk
5th of January 2009 (Mon), 22:45
I think I'm out too. I probably wont be able to do anything until spring time. I'm going to be unbelievably busy for the next few months on weekends.

Will future get togethers be posted in here or will there be a new thread? I'll just stay subscribed to this thread to keep up on what's happening.

Pyromaniac
5th of January 2009 (Mon), 22:58
Hey Scott, since your the OP can you go back and add a poll (never tried it myself so I don't know if you can or not)? If so maybe you can do that and put up some different dates and we can see what dates will be best for the most people. If you can't add a poll to this one maybe start a new thread with one that has maybe ten dates. It would probably be the easiest way to keep track of the best dates.

Pyromaniac
5th of January 2009 (Mon), 23:12
Scott,

I created a test thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=625296)and it looks like the OP can edit the thread and add a poll. I ask the mod's to lock it or delete the test so that it won't cause any confusion.

pennypue
6th of January 2009 (Tue), 00:48
I think keeping things in this thread makes it easier for us all to keep track of what might be happening. Way too easy to miss a new thread.

mayerk, you got any weekday time available?

ScottDR
6th of January 2009 (Tue), 08:38
I like the idea of keeping this thread as well...Pyromaniac, check your PM's.

Scott PM'd you back.

It looks like I was wrong about that.

ScottDR
6th of January 2009 (Tue), 21:53
D'oh! That stinks. Well, we can keep it informal in here. That's what we did in AZ and it worked well. I certainly learned a ton from them and hope we can eventually all meet the same way and learn from each other.

I say we still aim for the 17th :)

Hopefully we can get others going. Sorry you can't be there Penny. :(

Happened to drive through a bit of downtown last night and WOW I'd love to go down there and try to capture some of the architecture!

Believe me, I want to be there. I have to go see "Wicked" with my wife and in-laws in Louisville on Saturday afternoon. Not looking foreword to that at all.
Be sure to give us a full report and post some of your shots.

ScottDR

*Sigh* Oh well, it'll be fun to go out. Looking forward to meeting you Pyro. You have any favorite places you'd like to go?

Pyromaniac
12th of January 2009 (Mon), 20:29
I like a lot of places, what kind if stuff do you want to shoot? The forecast high for Saturday is only 29 with a chance of snow.

ScottDR
12th of January 2009 (Mon), 21:57
D'oh! Well, honestly I have been itching to get some architecture shots in since I drove through part of downtown the other evening.

If it's snowing/overcast it might be a bummer. Maybe we'll have to do the indoors place Penny mentioned last week if it's snowy?

Pyromaniac
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 09:43
[quote=pennypue;6976069]Yeah, I stalked you....on your galleries. :D That's why I suggested Krohn Conservatory. That and it's indoors and warm!!!/quote]

Krohn Conservatory (http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/cityparks/pages/-3452-/) is a pretty cool place to shoot, and it will be nice and warm inside. It's also just outside downtown, so if the weather isn't as bad as what they are calling for we can still go shoot downtown.

ScottDR
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 11:34
I sure wish the conservatory opened earlier. I have a meeting at 1PM just SW of Hamilton :(. Let's aim for downtown depending on weather. If it weren't for that meeting I'd be more than game for the either/or plan.

Looking forward to meeting you as well!

Pyromaniac
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 16:15
So what time do you want to plan on meeting, and where do you want to meet? I am only about 10 minutes from downtown where I live.

ScottDR
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 16:51
Oh wow, that's great! I'm between Hamilton and Fairfield Township. And West Chester Township is less than 2 miles East of me. Would there be an easy place to meet near the I75?

pennypue
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 21:23
What time are you guys meeting?

ScottDR
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 21:34
I'm hoping by 8AM to capture the morning light :). Are you going to be around now Penny?

pennypue
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 21:40
Well, I have to be at the baby shower at 2pm in Dayton......so I'm guessing that you guys might be done in time for me to do both. hehe

The part I'm most worried about is if I'd have enough oomph left for the baby shower!!!
Our outing last week combined with playing with the tripod after you left led me to utilize some of my painkillers.

ScottDR
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 22:12
Crap, I'm sorry :(. If it's any consolation, I do want to be at the 1PM mtg on Saturday so we should be done before noon. But don't push it! I'm wondering if we should change to Sunday as we can go indoors (conservatory) if we decide it's too cold.

Thoughts?

Pyromaniac
13th of January 2009 (Tue), 22:50
I'm fine with Sunday or if it would work better for a few more people we could do next weekend. I'm pretty flexible right now, my next weekend to work isn't until the 14th. I'm also of Thursday and Friday this week if anyone has some free time during the day.

Pyro-I would be up for Thursday or Friday but now I'm busy Thursday and until noon Friday (working on landing a job). Let's keep Sunday in mind (we'll watch forecasts) so time won't be so tight (since I need to be back up here by 1Pm Saturday).

Sunday works for me! Kevin? What is everyone's preference, evening/daytime/morning? I'm open for any/all.

It would depend on what time Sunday. I work Saturday night and my wife works Sunday night. I'm more open in the morning after work. What's the weather suppose to be like? I think we're suppose to get some flurries Sat. night.

Agreed, thanks for the link :). Penny, I think FB can be random sometimes on searching. At least that's my experience.

Anyway, the latest forecast has changed in a big way again (imagine that). After today there is no chance of precip. until late Monday night/Tuesday :D.

Sunday morning then...where are we shooting, where do we meet and what time? Just to toss out a couple of ideas: I'm in love with the architecture downtown or we can finally hit the park I keep hearing about, Devou. Otherwise as previously stated, I'm up for anything. Let's make it happen!

There is a place out on 50 (W of the city) that you look up the river and can see the city as a reflection in the river. I may try to get out there tomorrow night at work and find the exact spot. I think it would be a nice place for a sunrise photo opp. Maybe not Sunday, but sometime.

I was just up in your area today and saw two great locations for some exterior portraits, urban style. Both were off I-75: the first is the Old Crosley Factory (about 5 miles north of the river.) The 2nd was a building that faced right on i-75 at exit four. It looked a little 'bombed out" covered in some really cool graffiti, missing door, red brick, not very large.

Not certain about the neighborhood -- you would no better than I -- but I was wishing I had a cute brunette with me when I saw them to take some shots.

Actually, I guess you can't go wrong if you always have a cute brunette with you -- as a matter of principle.

I was sort of wanting to shot some pano's from Devou. I have a done a few last year, and was thinking that one done at sunrise would be kind of cool to do. The spot with the reflection sounds interesting to so now I'm having trouble making up my mind about which I would rather do.

I'm actually on the road now heading to the spot on Rte. 50 to check it out. I'm all for Devou park. I'd like to work on panos. I've never really did those. According to the website, Devou park opens at 08:00.

I was looking for the hours that the park is open, where did you find it?

I have a pano head I use for them. I tried several times with just my pan/tilt head but they would never line up right. I just posted a couple of them on my website if you want to see them.

I was figuring on getting up to the park before the sun comes up so I have time to set up and try to swing several sets as it rises.

Where you looking at Covington parks website (http://www.covingtonky.com/index.asp?page=rec_parks). The hours listed there are 8 to 4:30, but those are the hours that the recreation department office is open. I know the park "closes" at sunset, but I'm not really sure what time it opens.

The park is pretty easy to find. Just take 75 south across the river and take the first exit off the bridge, make a right go around the bend and make the first left and go up the BIG hill. The entrance to the park is at the top on the right. You should be able to follow the signs to the pavilion and overlook.

Edit: You still still probably lookup direction just so you have something with you. and you can call me if you get lost again.

I am planning on getting there about 7 so that I have time to get set up and be ready to shoot as the sun comes up.

There is one day set aside at the Butterfly Show that is just for photographers. It's a little easier to take pictures of butterflies when the little ankle biters aren't grabbing the butterflies you're trying to get pictures of.

Thanks Scott. Well, most importantly, is hand holding this lens out of the question. Second, what are your thoughts on the "sliding" zoom function? It seems a little weird to me, like it might be something I would regret buying the lens over.

I'm undecided between this and the 70-200 2.8 . I like the range of the 100-400 but the 2.8 is nice on the 70-200. I'm leaning heavily toward the 100-400 but hesitant about pulling the trigger on it yet as I need to do a little more homework on it first. Any insight you could offer would be a great help. Thanks

Forgive me for horning in from Scott's former home base...

The 100-400 is easily hand-holdable and the Push Me / Pull You zoom (while unique) isn't really all that hard to get used to. There is a zoom lock ring which can both prevent unwanted zoom creep while carrying it as well as allow you to "preset" a focal length and keep it there.

The hardest part is remembering to lock the zoom before tossing the camera on your shoulder.

The first few times it will be
Tilt Down .. BANG
Tilt Down .. BANG
Tilt Down .. BANG

Fortunately, it's pretty rugged! ;)

(Hi Scott...)

Thanks very much. I was pretty confidant this could be hand held until I saw this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=636659) thread in the BST forums here on POTN. Check out the second from last picture. It looks to be about the size of a good sized loaf of bread when fully extended. I must admit, I got a little worried after I saw this picture.
Still interested on your input Scott, and sorry to everyone for hijacking this thread. I promise to get it right back on topic

First, no apologies needed from anyone as we are all here to learn. Thanks for stopping in Jay! :D As an owner of a copy he's the one to ask. Quite a few of the AZ POTN people own a copy and can give feedback.

I was lent one for a day (thanks again Tammie O :). I didn't mind the push/pull at all. I did however carry it most of the day on camera (with a 1.4x extender making it manual focus on a non-1d). While it's very easy to hand-hold, it does become a bit heavy after 3-5 hours of walking around.

If you have any doubts, rent one and try it for yourself. There have been several people who have recommended two sites but I can only remember one: www.lensrentals.com

It's a great lens and it's got GREAT reach with a crop body.

Mayerk,

I have a 100-400. If you want to get together sometime I can let you check it out. Its not hard to use at all. On a 30D with a grip it can get a little heavy if your are carrying it around for a long time, but other than that its a pretty nice lens.

I like to shoot all sorts of things...also read "I'm equally bad shooting all things" ;)

Recently, I have been getting into glamour photography, but I enjoy landscapes when its nice out. I am really looking for cool places to shoot at in the city, I have only been here for 1 1/2 years, so Im relatively new. I checked out Pyramid Hill this fall, and it was definitely worth the drive, its a cool place.

Im really interested in getting some cool boat shots on the water when the weather gets warm. I would also like to photograph some single engine airplanes doing take-offs and landings.

Are there any good photo stores around here besides Cord, Ritz, and Provident? I normally buy online, but I like to put some money in the local economy every once in a while.

Artificial lighting is a whole new ballgame. It really opens up doors in photography. I am still learning every time I go on a shoot, but I love every minute of it.

I have decided to take the strobist route and use speedlights instead of studio lights, it has some limitations, but its SOOO much more portable and I can set-up virtually anywhere...

We should do a shoot sometime when the weather gets nice, you casn give me some landscape tips and I can show you a few things with speedlights...

So did you go out an get any snow/ice shots?

Twiggles,

The camera shops you mentioned are the only ones that I am aware of locally. There may be a couple across the river in Kentucky but I'm not sure. Provident is good for those really odd things that no one else carries. If you are going to go to Cord the one in Kenwood is the best one to go to, it's the main store for the Cincinnati area. Personally I don't buy anything from Ritz, I have never really been very impressed with them.
