Last Saturday, Chris Maddock answered my plea and drove miles from his home to let me have a go with his 100-400 lens. (Thanks again Chris!) I really liked the lens and found it comfortable to use with my monopod.
And now I own one! I found a privately offered secondhand one about an hour away from me. The body shows some signs of use, but the glass and mechanics seem perfect. Best part ... I got it for £795 (which is just over 2/3rds of the best new price I found).
If the sun ever comes out again, I'll try to get some photos with it worthy of posting.
I am one happy bunny! :D

Only GBP 795, that means money left over to join the health club and work out so you can carry it.

I reckon I'll get a good workout just hoiking it around on my walks in the woods! I've finally found a method of carrying all my gear which really works for me. Everything is slotted onto a belt and the belt is supported by shoulder straps to spread the load. Now if I can just get everyone to stop laughing and scaring the wildlife and birds away ... :p

You should be able to get some cracking shots of the birds feeding outside your kitchen window, let alone carrying the lens anywhere ;-)
BTW - I didn't think your gear carrying method looked funny, it works and is effective - just what is needed.

:O Oh no, Sally, you've left "the path"! You're on your own now! :D
Congrats on the lens! :)
