looking for a permanent filter, what's the best and won't affect the image quality that much?

well, thanks for the reply. I figured that much though. I was wondering if anyone had any specific brands/models that they like and why.

is UV light bad for camera optics / sensors?
What's a "multicoat" going to do for me? Is this something that degrades on image quality? I'm just looking for a protective filter that has as little effect on the image as possible.

Multicoated means more coatings, which is generally a good thing. They stop reflections, and can reduce flare when light hits the lens.

Canon also do a clear "protect" filter if you, like me, tend to prefer not to have a UV filter.

I have a Hoya Ultra on my 70-200. The thing is so thin!

Hoya Super HMC Pro 1 UV. That's what I use, anyway.
