This is a picture I took down at the falls about a month ago. Any thoughts?

Exposure: 8 sec
Aperture: f/3.5
Focal Length: 18mm

Captivating subject and colors.

I'm bothered by the rights side. While the rocks are interesting, the main subject is the waterfall. It's in the left half of the picture and flows out that side. I think if you repositioned yourself, you might have been able to get the water flow as a diagonal across the image and still include the rocks.

Clone out the light pole on the right, the three street lights and the buildings and you have a shot worthy of decorating a wall.

Ditto on the lights and buildings.

I think if you had taken just a few steps back, and panned your camera just a couple degrees to the left, the composition would be spot on. Maybe a tad bit lower as well.

Somehow I find the color a bit disturbing. The pink sky and greenish brown water... I don't know. It could be a great shot with a few adjustments I think.

I think the water and the rocks and everything look good, but the sky bothers me...something just really doesn't look natural there. I think I'd separate the sky into it's own layer and do some manual color adjustment there until it fit the rest of the image.

Just my $02,
Jim

i agree with Jim here.

the water over the falls is beautiful, and it goes well with the purple tint.

but specifically the clouds in the sky is what bothered me. Try processing the sky on its own layer.

are you familiar with photoshop?

I'd like to know what you did to get that effect in the first place.

@marccaron21 - yes I know photoshop quite well. and not trying to take anything away from my photoshop skills but this shot is in "as shot" condition. The only thing I did to it was run it through lightroom to convert from raw.

Wow, weird shot, like it was taken on a different planet. There's something a little unsettling about it.

No offense intended, but I don't care for the colors. Too unnatural. I'm guessing they're that way due to overexposure. Eight seconds is a long time at f3.5, even at ISO 100. This is also evidenced by the lights being so big and bright, they had too much time to saturate. I shot a bunch of waterfalls just last month in dark forest light, and even at f16 I rarely had exposures of more than 2-3 seconds.

If it were me I'd do f8 or f11 if I wanted the long exposure for the flowing water and adjust shutter speed accordingly... maybe keeping the 8 seconds, maybe a 4-6 seconds. Not everything would be as bright, of course.

He was probably using ND filters.
