Little Egrets.

Out and about yesterday I saw 12 little egrets within a square mile of home.
A group of 4 in one field, then a group of 6 in another and finally on the way home (did a figure of eight trip) another 2.
We're quite lucky down here in Langstone Harbour for so many birds / migratorys etc & of course our resident colony of Little terns & Heronry.:D

One thing that amazes me with the Egret, is they spook at the slightest move, yet they're happy to wade about in the muddy fields right by the side of the road with cars whizzing by.
Easy to stop & take pics then? - Nope, as soon as you stop they take off and land a few yards further into the fields. I swear one of their troupe must have a built in camera detector.:lol:

Hoping that the light will improve so I can get some pics, but at the moment the days are too short & the light bad.

Just looked on Google Earth. You have some great places there to shoot egrets. Good luck and show us some pics :lol:

Out of interest I popped back to one of the larger fields by the sea shore not long after I posted and was surprised that there were 11 of them picking about in the stubble.
They were right across the other side today, so I thought how close could I get before they flew off.
They must have incredible eyesight, as soon as I was within several hundred yards of them they were off again - resettling even further away.
No chance of a pic today, but when I get some spare time I may build a hide in the ditch and hope they come closer.
Knowing my luck they'll all settle on the other side to where I site myself.:lol:

We have loads of Little Egrets in North Devon - I know of one spot where you could see anything up to 30-40 birds at times and get to within 30 yards or even nearer with no cover whatsoever. I think it is down to the environment that they are used to, the place I am thinking of has cars and people walking by all day so they get use to humans.

Vulcan, About the time you started this thread there were about 198 little egrets roosting at Thorney Island. Not sure if they are still around.
