Just curious....
How long does your PC/Mac take to convert/save a RAW file to a TIFF file using DPP?

My old 2.53ghz P4 with 1.5gb RAM: and to C/S a 14mg RAW file it takes 18 seconds or so...

Please ID your CPU/RAM and file size for comparison's sake...thanks

Not sure if mine counts as my 30d file sizes are only about 7mb on average.

Anyway, tried it on 7.57mb file - took just under 5 secs (Core2 Quad Q6660 2.4ghz, 3gb RAM, Vista 32bit).

About 2.5" on my quad core (3.2 gHz Q6600, 2x4 mb cache, 4 gb RAM) hackintosh as a 16-bit TIFF from 30d raw.

Haven't tried DPP, but using LR, my Q6600 will convert a 30D raw file in a second or so.


It is a bit hard to get anything objective with out having everyone convert the same file though.

He's wanting results from DPP. He needs to upload a raw file somewhere to keep the field level, though. Or, at least point to a raw file that everyone has access to.

Yeah, I saw that. I don't think I even have DPP installed on this machine.


Know anywhere a RAW file could be hosted?

Any chance Pekka would allow a single CR2 file to be hosted on POTN for everyone to try?

Don't know.
It could to awful things to the sites bandwidth.

To get a true and fair test, you need to convert at least 10 different files, and have all the export settings the same.
That might mean hosting 40-50mb of files.

Thanks for your replies everyone...I see that an upgrade would cut the C/S time a lot...in PhotoShop6 most operations take less 3-5 seconds or less so I didn't think of upgrading...but the C/S time of 18 sec. can be a drag...
I think I'll be on the lookout for a core2duo or dual core bargain this holiday...

1DMk2 file to 16bpc tiff: About 23 seconds on my PB G4 with iTunes and quite a few tabs open in FF3 :lol:

40D raw file to 16 bit tiff 8 seconds on a P4 3.0 with 1 gig ram.
