Hi All,

Well, from a work vending machine...comes out this interesting little pretzel...I'm not sure what to call it? Possibly..."The Chow Mein Pretzel"? I added both color and black and white. My white balance is definitely off, as I shot in incandescent lighting, and shot in JPG :| Please provide some pointers.

What would be the best setting to have shot this pretzel under incandescent? I am still learning to use my 40D.

Thank you so much guys/gals.

Well, I'd recommend shooting in RAW, and adjust your white balance in post. If you really want to shoot in JPG, probably 'auto' or 'tungsten.'

The 40D has a white-balance setting for incandescent (4th click down from AWB as you turn the wheel on the back of the camera clockwise) - try that first. Otherwise shoot a plain white piece of paper filling your frame and use Custom White balance. It's all in your user manual. Might I suggest a more interesting subject next time?

Thank you for the suggestions.

I still have lots to learn, and will work on white balance.

Since this was shot in jpeg and since there's probably a good chance the pretzel has already been eaten, what I would suggest for this particular shot is try playing with the color in Photoshop. I don't think the B&W really does anything for this shot so I would go back and mess around with the reds and yellows until you got a more natural looking color. If you have it available, the "White Neutralizer" in Nik Efex Pro would probably do a wonderful job here.

For future reference, while I'm not sure I would really mess with setting a custom white balance just to shoot a weird pretzel...although it is a good thing to know. In a case such as this, I'd just shoot in RAW (which is always a good idea anyways) and tweak the color later in pp. Also, the way you have it here the shadows look a tich harsh to me...I might also try for a bit softer lighting :D.

Very weird looking pretzel...once you tweak the color, I'd send a copy of it in to Rold Gold...who knows, maybe they'll send you a free bag! LOL!

Peace,
Jim

Way too dark, but a strange pretzel to be sure.

If its OK for forum members to edit your images you can select "Image Editing OK" in your preferences. Very scary snack you have there.
