Good ones- looks a bit of a lighting nightmare. Would have loved to see some lower power shots.
Think I would have tried this on a curved sheet of white paper- helps to scatter some light and also reduces the amount of direct light on the subject.

Wow..what a fantastic looking beetle! Annoyingly reflective though!

will using a flash diffuser help reduce the reflection? any suggestions when using a donut shaped macro flash on shooting subjects that are quite reflective?

I agree with Brian -would love to see this guy from the side and head on at low angles. Also try tilting and turning the flash heads when you shoot something that's so reflective -even turning the entire flash mount by just a little can make a big difference.

Same thing -turn the entire flash assembly to change the angle that the light is hitting the subject. If you're using ratio control (and you should be with a ring flash) then set it no higher than 2 to 1 when shooting a reflective object. If you have your rig on a tripod then take the flash assembly off of the lens and hold it at a high angle to the subject...
