Thanks for the comment! I believe it's a remnant of a climbing vine that happened to wrap around the wire right next to the other coil. It just looked too cool to pass up.

They don't let you get near their roots anymore...when they realized how superficial they were and that people trampling on them was damaging the trees. There are still plenty of idiots who violate the rules and sneak thru the fences for a photo op.

It's from a beautiful old historic cemetery with lots of gothic stones and beautiful views of the James River and the Richmond skyline. Two Presidents are buried there - Monroe and Tyler - along with, ahem, Jefferson Davis. We were the Capital of the Confederacy, after all, something I keep trying to forget. One of my favorite places to go photograph.

A funny story on my first visit actually yielding any photographs. My aunt was buried there, and I decided I'd try to find her first then wander about the cemetery. I'd been there at the funeral, but no other time since then. Well, I went on a cloudy Saturday, and I wandered and wandered and wandered to no avail. Determined, I went back the next day, remembering on the way there that it was the anniversary of her death. Beautiful sunny day. I went STRAIGHT to her grave. There's a legend there of a dog statue watching over a little girl's grave. I passed it and went on. I then saw a beautiful spider web on a lamp hanging above a grave, and, just beside it, another stone dog. This time I stopped. And damn if I didn't see aunt's last name right there on the stone behind the dog. Yup, it was hers. I know there's ghost stories involved with that cemetery, but this one was a happy one, guiding me right where I was supposed to go!
