Greetings,

A while back I had accidentally deleted a directory on my hard drive containing Jpg images. I took the drive to an associates work who had Easy Recovery Ver 6 and he was able to recover the lost JPG files. Everything looks fine with the files (as in file size and file names, etc) but we are not able to open or view the pictures? They seem to be damaged in some way....

I wanted to submit this email to you folks to ask if this is common with recovered JPGs or if you have seen this before? If yes, would you have any suggestions on what I could try to repair the images back to a viewable state? Possibly you could recommend a some type of repair software tool, or you have one on hand?

Is there any error message when you try to open the jpg file? Have you tried opening the files with various programs? Occasionally, I have had a file that will open in some programs but not others.

When I try to preview it with WinXP it says there is "No Preview Available". When I try and open the same file with MS Photo Editor on WinXP Pro it gives an error message that says "Can't Determine Type".

Do you have ACDSee Classic 2.43 (or above)? If so, do the JPGs show up? If they do, use Ctrl-F to convert to JPG or TIF. (Yes, I know it's a JPG to JPG conversion.) That has helped me in the past.

If you don't have ACDSee and want to try this approach, download the trial from www.acdsystems.com. Or try the same conversion technique in the free Irfanview from www.irfanview.com.

Good luck.
