Well this was the last game before the CIF starts up (will be this thursday or friday) I was very lucky as I got to use a friends 1D Mark III and 300 2.8 (which was a bit big given the size of the field, but it was better than the 70-200 F4 that im usually stuck with haha
I absolutly love that 1D III though, amazing camera.

All shots are at ISO 3200, using 1/200 shutter speed at 2.8
I know, the lighting is horrible at our stadium.

All CC is welcome, and I would love to get some tips!
The equipment I have at hand is the following:
40D
XTi
Tamron 28-75 2.8
Canon 85 1.8
Canon 70-200 F4
430EX flash
Canon 100-400 IS

I know none of that is good for night time football (especially for our horrible lighting system) but it's all i get.

The match-up:
Garden Grove Argos (red) Score: 41
VS
Rancho Alamitos Vaqueros (white) Score: 20

#1 This one Is one of the few that I accidentally bumped down to 1/125

Again, sorry for all the noise and the dark images, hopfully sombody can give me some tips for next game that will make it better.

But it looks like I'll have to go back to using the 70-200 F4 on my 40D and 430EX flash.

Thanks for looking!

which was a bit big given the size of the field

Do they play on bigger fields in GG?

The only tip I can give you is to tell them to install better lighting. There isn't much you can do. These look fine considering the conditions. There is a bit of green tint so you might want to tweak the WB.

No Dan, what I was saying was that the 300 2.8 was a bit to long (for my taste anyway) For one, im used to having to use a flash and having zoom, so between trying to get decent lighting and not being able to zoom, I found myself struggling a bit.

It was a wonderfull expirience using that kind of equipment though :D

Thanks for the WB tip, i'll have to figure that out. What do you suggest I do?

Ahhhh. Big primes takes some getting used to for sure. For night stuff I shoot RAW with AWB and sort out WB issues after the fact. I've tried CWB but things change so much during the game under the lights that I just don't bother with it anymore.

In PS you can use curves by activating only the green channel and pulling it down in the center.

Great, thanks dan :)

I would love to start shooting RAW, but the problem is that I dont have a card reader, so I have to connect the camera directly to the computer via the USB cable. Now, I havnt tested it since getting the 40D, but on the XTi, it would make me download 2 of each photo, 1 JPG and 1 RAW, and the RAW file wouldnt open in PS :(

Any ideas of what I can do for this? or do I need a card reader?

You must have set it to Raw+jpg. Card readers are pretty damn cheap, like $10 I think.

Hmm, on photoshop or on the camera?
there are a lot of quality styles on the 40D  should I do RAW+L or just plain RAW?

I will look into getting a card reader soon though. I had put it off because I was going to build a computer from scratch (as mine is getting very old and slow) and just instal an internal card reader, but i ended up getting a 40D and 100-400 L instead

yea the spending never stops. There is a setting on camera for raw only.

Yeah, I just found an old card reader laying around. I took a random shot using just the plain RAW setting, uploaded it to my computer through the card reader and the USB device, and neither will open in photoshop :(

Im not sure what im doing wrong, but it's driving me crazy!!

Use Digital Photo Professional (DPP) it came with your camera from Canon to open RAW images. Other choices include Irfanview and Lightroom.

It wont let me see or do anything to the RAW immage in that program either, only open it (but the thumbnail is plain grey)

Sounds like you need to get some updates to Adobe Camera Raw or for DPP. Depending on which one you use. As camera companies come out with new cameras they never use the same RAW format. Software companies always issue updates so you can open the new RAW files from the newer cameras.

Thanks for that Dale :)
I have it working now. I'll have to start shooting in RAW more now, I really like being able to adjust things so much (although im pretty impatient somtimes, so the editing times are going to kill me!)

Just until you get a work flow built up. It actually takes me longer to do JPGs then it does RAW. I have Light room set up to pretty much import my photos exactly the way I like. If I do need to adjust something I use the dozens of presets that I've made and sync all the photos.
