Well, after ruminating over it, I did a google search and found the camera in stock in only one store: Focus Camera in Brooklyn, N.Y., about 50 miles from my house in Westchester. So, after accompanying my wife to make funeral arrangements for her sister who died last evening (after lingering four months in a coma resulting from a stroke which led to a car accident) my 13 year old daughter and I went to Brooklyn, while my 15 year old daughter and my wife went to the hospital to gather the photos and momentos that hung in her room. My wife insisted that I go get the camera. She is a really special person.

After getting to the store, we hung around for about an hour to give the battery a partial charge, and then I hooked up my new 70-300 DO lens, my new 580ex flash, and drove about six miles to the New York Zoological Society Aquarium in Coney Island.

We walked around in the blowing snow, as I had the camera on the supplied Canon wide strap around my neck. I was shooting like crazy, the walruses, seals; penguins were hiding, etc., when I got the card full message. Raw plus large JPEG can sure exhaust a 1gb card quickly. On the way home, I transfered the card to my Epson p2000 and was able to view only the jpegs, as the raw files are too large. I'm going to download them now to my computer.

I love the camera. Thank you, one and all, for all the help you've been so far and for your anticipated help as questions crop up while I become familiar with a 1 series camera.

Congratulations. We look forward to seeing the pictures....

We get to your part of the world a couple times a year. My wife's aunt lives in Larchmont. Maybe you'll let me borrow your camera next time I'm there

Belmondo, I work in White Plains, a stone's throw from Larchmont. Give me a ring or an email (mdjak@aol.com). I'd gladly loan you the camera while you're in. In exchange for some lessons, that is.

I am about to sign off on the forum and download them to my computer. I was driving home while my daughter was viewing them on the epson. I'll report on that shortly. I only had my Lowepro photo runner with me, a rather small belt pack. The camera fit, but barely. Unfortunately, I left my 100mm 2.8 macro in the car. I think that would have been ideal for the shots of the seals and walruses through the glass. We'll see.

BTW, I just noticed a red circle below my name that says I'm invisible. Why is that and how do I fix it? Thanks

I was kidding about borrowing the camera, but we can definitely get together for a sandwich or something. I've had occasion to play with a 1DsII, and it's a beatiful piece of equipment----not much different in look and feel from my 1D MkII, but all those pixels, and that full frame sensor.

I look forward to it.

It's snowing like crazy here now and I just got back inside after plowing my and my neighbor's driveway. Before going out, I tried to download the pictures with the white cord that I had laying here from my 20D. The computer recognized the new hardware, said it was working, but Breeze Browser Downloader Pro did not launch as it usually does. When I launched it, it could not find the camera. I'll have to dig out the new cable and give it a go that way.

A card reader will be a must for your 'King Size' files . . . way to go. I just love to see people reach some of their dreams. I look forward to your posts as well.

I've never used the cable...always a card reader. It's just a lot simpler.

Congrats on your purchase. You'll love it. I still marvel at mine every time I use it. My clients really like the size of the images it can produce as well. Canon just rocks!!!

Mark,

First my condolences on your loss. Also, what a special wife you have. Treasure her.

Now, to the camera. Enjoy it to the hilt. Take it out and take some lovely images to show all of us.

Congratulations,

Mark

We have family in Scarsdale, so they are probably nearby. We visit them quite frequently....maybe next time I am in the area I'll give you a holler. :)

Congrats MDJAK on your new camera...

You'll love every last pound and mexapixel of it I'm sure.
My condolences to you and yours. Your wife does sound special as I'm sure that, the all too true reality that life is just way too short, has unfortunately kicked in. You should use that camera of yours with passion, creativity and insight, as it is one of our only weapons in the battle against the harsh realities of mother nature.

Capture the magic...

ForEVER

(Or for as long as you can keep those disks, backups and copies before they get zapped, corrupted or erased ;) )
PS. I live in Queens, own the same camera and would love to find out how to take some lessons from someone who could take my knowledge and skillset to the next level. Obviously, hanging out on this thing helps quite a bit.

KUDOS all !

Thanks to you all for your well wishes.

I'd be happy to meet any member of this forum for a day of shooting. I love to go to Manhattan and shoot street candids. Recently, I saw a taxicab burst in flames as my family and I were walking along Central Park West returning from a play on Broadway. Naturally, my camera was in my car ten blocks away.

As far as the requests to post pictures, I've done it on one other forum relating to autos but never on this one. Is it the same procedure, post it to, in my case, photobucket.com, then copy the tag or url into a post here?

Thanks

Congratulations!!!! I've only seen a 1 series body on the shelves of Adorama and B&H. I've never held one in my hands and I've never looked through its viewfinder. I'm sure it must be an awesome experience.............Enjoy it!!! And sorry for your loss............and yes, your wife is great!!!

Next time you go to B&H, ask to see it. Have your CF card with you. They will put any lens on it for you and let you play. I shot over 20 shots of customers, etc so I could see the quality first hand when I got home.

I think I said before, looking through the viewfinder is truly an eye-opening experience. But I still have mega learning to do. The camera controls, while I'm sure will soon become second nature, are a little wacky.

Today, I used my 17-40 on the 1Ds Mark II. I forgot what wide angle was. It's been so long since I traded in my F100 for the D100 and have lived with the crop until now. Wow, what fun.
