In february I purchased a new canon camera I used it nearly everyday, I was enjoying learning new photography skills and expanding my knowledge. On October 25, 2008 after taking a few shots of my children hunting the camera said the batteries were low and to change. After installing fresh batteries the camera would not come back on, beeping repeatedly and said lens error please restart camera. I contacted canon for repair and after following all of there instructions to ship the camera to them with proper documentation they received the camera and stated that upion intial inspection the issue was covered under warranty and would be repaired.

A Week later I was contacted by canon saying the camera was unrepairable and that there was evidence of liquid damage inside. This is a complete fabrication as the camera was always kept in a secure and dry case and not used in bad weather. I am still in shock that a company the size of canon would blatenly lie and take advantage of their customers. We purchased a canon for it's name. I just want to share this information with anyone looking to invest in a camera that you need to watch out for yourself because no one else is.

Give them a call, if you have not done so yet! I had a G7 with dust on the sensor and after sending it to Canon they wanted to charge me - I called back and asked if they were kidding (the camera was still under warranty). After looking into the case one more time they agreed that this would be covered and the cleaning was free. You never know - so call them.

Call them. I called for an estimate one time which they said wouldn't be covered under warranty..turns out after i complained to them on the phone, it WAS covered (supposed water damage)

Exact same issue with my dads S5.

Bought from Amazon 5 months ago - Amazon said to contact Canon.

Canon said there was no known issue with this fault (Used to be called the E18 - Google that and tell me it aint a known issue!)

Went back to Amazon who have issued a full refund seeing as the S5 is now no longer on sale.

This and the recent death of a 1D shutter at 20k (£200 to fix!) has meant my appreciation of all things Canon HQ is at an all time low.

If I did not have a load of Canon equipment I may be tempted to buy a Noink

Sorry to hear that marshmonster. I agree with the others and that you should call them. If you heinously deny that the camera was water-damaged, then Canon may be able to do something for you.

I agree, call them. Tell them exactly what you told us. Since they have already declared the camera DOA, I don't see where you have anything to lose. Ask to speak to a supervisor or something. I really hate this for you because the only time I ever had to use Canon service, I got five-star treatment, and I'm sure there are many here who did as well. Sincerely, best of luck to you.
