I'm going to travel around Israel, Cairo and Jordan for a little less than 3 weeks. Right now I have a 2 gig card which obviously won't be enough. Where does everyone suggest I pick up some reliable cheap cards. I'm assuming I'd shoot about 2 gigs a day?

I also will likely get the Epson P2000 or P3000. I'm a little worried about buying memory cards online because I can't have anything fail on me while overseas.

Calumet advertised an unbelieveable rebate that I learned of on one of the on-line forums. Lexar mistakenly offered a $70.00 rebate on their 4Gig 300x UDMA CF cards which were available at calumet for $73.99 before rebate. It took Lexar about two days to realize that they had meant a $20.00 rebate - not $70 bucks.

I got under the wire and bought three on 11/5/08. Lexar recinded the rebate after 11/6/08. Twelve Gb of CF memory for twelve bucks ain't all that bad - even with California sales tax added on...

hahaha I would say not! In a dream world I'd have about 10-15 2gig cards which ALL would be backed up to a portable HD. this way itd be in 2 places. I'm a bit iffy on erasing cards once on the drive before they get to my laptop back home...but 2gig cards x 13 = $$$ :(

get the Epson P3000... i'm using it, if better... get the P5000.... because 40GB is seriously not enough. I just came back from europe for 38 days, shot about 160GB of photos in raw... i brought the Maxtor One Touch 250GB hard drive along, but you would need a laptop to transfer the P3000 files. (if it exceed 40GB)

P3000 has a USB slot, but you can't read it if you plug the maxtor one touch or other external hard disk into it. It could read pendrives, like 8-32GB pendrives and you can back up from there... its much cheaper then buying new memory cards as good ones are really expensive. You can open up the folders in P3000, just like a mini laptop.

But if you assume you'll be going more then 160Gb, then I highly recommend you buy a mini laptop, like those 8.9 inch... HP, or Dell and a external hard disk like Maxtor One Touch together. They are much reliable and weight almost the same as a P3000 with 250GB external hard drive. The HP has a 160GB inside it. If you're using SD cards, its a heads up because there is a built in reader for that and you wont need another external card reader. But this set up is really slow to back up, because you'll need to have time to turn on windows vista and this and that...

The P3000 is faster then P2000 a lot. And I think its really good, I have 2GB + 1 + 1. I never bought any memory cards before, all those are won from Digital Camera Magazine. The P3000 backup time depends on your memory card, Ultra II is good enough, but if you're using extreme it will be better. But 40Gb is seriously not enough, neither does 80GB for the whole trip...

P3000 price is about the same as a mini laptop.

Costco sells 4 gig Sandisk cards for like 27 bucks each (in Canada, I assume the US is not that different)...pick up a few of those and you'll be fine.

Go here http://shop.kingston.com//memtype_parts.asp?promo=SPWKPKS&type=CompactFlash&SUBMIT1=Find to find some nice deals on a good product.

Pick up an 8GB card for $35.00 US. Not bad.

I use these cards almost exclusively and have never had a problem with them. I like the 8GB size because you can backup the data on one DL DVD.

The hyperdrives are pretty good too, you can get the casing, and add a hard drive of any size that you want. The screens aren't that big, but will you really be scrutinising your photos while you are there? Have a think about your storage options, as solid state (eg flash cards) are much more robust than hard drives with moving parts, if your storage device dies, you could lose all pics on it. I brought two to Nepal, and had one fail on day three, glad we brought two.

Get your cards online from places that people recommend, wouldn't do ebay. I've always used Transcend (Aussies don't get the sandisk rebates) - 120x and 266x cards without any problems.

I got a P2000 so now I have 40 gigs. I wish it was a bit faster for playback. I find raw files are painfully slow to sift through. I'm also going to bring about 30 gigs of memory cards so in theory i should't have to reuse any cards & have it all backed up on the p2000

If you don't need speed get a CF to SDHC adapter. You can get a 16gb SD card for like 33 bucks (USD).

Does that work in a 5D? Is it reliable?
