Hello all,

I'm curious about Geotagging and the use of it with photography. I'll admit, I don't exactly understand the benefits of this unique feature so maybe this forum can help me better understand. I know it simply provides you geographical identification to your photograph but why would you exactly need this function? I can understand maybe using it for scouting when going on location shoots but what else?

If someone asks you where you took the shot it might be cool to find out the exact location. It does sound a little gimmicky to me but it could be a neat feature if you need to know where you took a picture or something like that. (map data maybe?)

There are forums on the net that allow people to share their photographs with geotagging information so that others can see where a photo was taken, in programs like Google Earth.

It helped me enormously when I planned a trip to Italy recently, going via France and Switzerland, as it allowed me to view some photographs taken in the areas that we would be travelling through.

Panoramio hosts one such forum, and allows you to upload geotagged photos that others might enjoy.

I posted this photo on a motoring forum I frequent, and a lot of people wanted to know where it was. By imbedding the Panoramio hosted image, it allows them to click on the photo to see exactly where it was taken.

There are a lot of locations found by accident where wonderful images can be taken. It gets difficult trying to remember where these locations are as the years go by. With Geotagging it becomes a snap finding those out of way locations.

Some day soon you will see it as an included function on cameras as well as HDR bracketing. The little symbol functions will be on point and shoot cameras.
