I would love to understand a little more about 'Parameter 1' vs. 2 on my 20D. I have increased the contrast and sharpness on Parameter 1 but not sure if I notice much of a difference. What should I do with parameter 2?? Why are there 2 and how should I be using them??
Simple terms please.....I am more of a learn by doing than learn by the book girl:confused:
Thanks,
Maureen

HI Maureen,
If you set the parameters to either "parameter 1" or "parameter 2" you should see in the 20D main screen(on the back of the camera) the detailed settings that each parameter set uses in terms of contrast, sharpness, saturation and colour tone
parameter1 sets each of these values to +1, parameter2 leaves them at 0
you can set these parameters manually and save them as "set 1, 2, and 3" if you wish.
Alternatively, leave things at 0, and then adjust images when you download them to your computer!
good luck, and have fun experimenting!

You don't have to use more than one parameter set, but you can ... if you want to quickly change between two settings of your camera.
Best regards,
Andy

I did change parameter 1 to increase the sharpness and contrast.... didn't notice much of a change but of course the old computer can do anything I (or the camera) can't. Thanks you guys...sure has been fun & informative here. Not to mention all the belly laughs I've gotten from you all. So glad I found this forum.....:D

Like was stated Parameter 1 and 2 is a preset. 2 is neutral letting you do it in an editing program. Parameter 1 makes a slight adjustment for contrast/sharpness and saturation only.To adjsut tone you have to go to set 1/ 2/ 3
Canon settings do very little at +1 and a little more at +2 and you use the three set functions. Set 1 - 2 - 3. You can set it three different ways for different situations. MOst of us find that we are better off doing it in Photoshop, becausae we can tweek it more.

Canon deliberately designs the DSLRs to shoot flatter, and with less saturation and sharpness than their P&S cameras, and the "more professional" the camera is, the flatter, less saturated, and less sharp it's designed to shoot. In other words, where you wouldn't have to adjust a P&S camera at all, you have to adjust the DRebel quite a bit, the 20D even more, and a 1D even more than that.
You can see a chart of how they line up in terms of settings in Canon's nice pamphlet:
