I took the plunge and ordered the 50d tonight. I also got the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8

Should be delivered Tuesday in time for a show on Friday night @ Hard Rock Cafe Boston.

I'll be doing some serious testing on the high ISO in concert situations and report back on what I find. I'm rather optimistic.

Just got it a little while ago. WOW, this puppy is nice. Will find out how it goes concert-wise on Friday night @ the Hard Rock Cafe.

As long as it kicks the XTi's ass, I'm happy (i'm sure it will too)

Hi LondonBlue, check the owners manual (page 72) to see how you can change the type of light (white balance) you will be shooting under. Most concerts will be using tungsten filament lights which (under normal daylight film) produce a "red shift" in the image results. So, what I found on my Canon 50D was Menu > (second tab over) > White Balance > Tungsten. Take some test shots of a standard 100w light bulb. Most concerts use 1500w lights.

I hope this helps you.

The standard stage light are 1200W (1.2KW in the biz) Par 64's, 800W Par 56's or 1.2KW moving lights, which are closer to 800W output due to the motors. (I'm an ex theatrical lighting guy :D).

The wattage (aka power output, I'm also an electrical engineer :D) of a light has nothing to do with temperature however. A 15W Compact Florescent will give you a completely different color temperature then a 15W incandescent. A 100W incandescent should give you a similar temperature to a incandescent theatrical light. A lot of theatrical lights, moving heads included, don't use incandescent bulbs. The new RGB LED stage lights also give a completely different color temperature.

When I shoot, I set my WB to auto, then if need be change it in post based on what I remember. Not to be an ass, but I know how WB works... I figured that one out back with my P&S.

What brought this up anyway? No where in this thread do I complain about WB in the 50D or lighting issues at venues.......

I saw in your original post was "I'll be doing some serious testing on the high ISO in concert situations" where I thought that you were interested in knowing that concert lights have a warmer wavelength. I had NO IDEA that you were well versed in the WB setting, OR, in the theatrical lighting business. I didn't intend to challenge your intelligence... just offering a little insight from my past experience. I apologize if I offended you.

Sorry I didn't mean to come off like a complete ass, but I really didn't know what you were talking about. As far as "serious testing in high ISO concert situations", that was more about noise of the new sensor then WB.

IMO JR was just offering some advice to help out from his experience, and you jumped all over his butt. I have a hard time with anyone catching crap for offering advice, if someone takes the time to offer some advice, the least I can do is listen and thank them, even if I already new what they were talking about.

BTW I'm not attacking or criticizing you ... just something to think about.

the advice made no sense in context of this thread.

Although I can't disagree ... you topic also had no point other than to proclaim you received a new body and were going to shoot at the hard rock. JR was just saying he shoot concerts also and he found the WB setting to be benificial.

But like i said I'm not criticizing you ... just throwing my observation out here :)

I thought it did?

The main jist of this thread was "Hi everyone, guess what - I got a 50D". Generally speaking these sorts of threads are frowned upon, because they're kinda pointless.. UNLESS you spice it up a little with some questions or how you intend to use the camera. Well you posted this thread in the Performing Arts forum and you stated you were going to use it in concerts. Key points. Jr came in and gave some advice relating to concert shooting. How did the advice make no sense with relation to context? I thought what Jr said was rather routine and relevant to the context of this thread. It doesn't matter if his advice was already known to you - the point is he tried to chip in and throw a few words and well-wishes to a fellow photographer. It's the best one can do with a typical "I bought a new camera!" type of thread. Maybe all you wanted were 'Congratulations' posts, but I'd feel lucky if I could get words of advice instead (even if I already knew the advice).

I certainly thought you jumped a little on him.

Have to agree Lonodon, you did jump all over him.
Admit it, let it go, move on.
