Hello people!
I recently bought a 300D and i think theres something wrong with the transfer rate from the camera to the computer.
Firstly as the camera doesn't come with a card i bought a SanDisk 512 MB(is this high speed cause im not sure).
Secondly when i transferred about 230MB of pictures from the camera it took about 25 min to complete  .Is this ok?
And another thing which i find strange is that when i connect the camera to the comp and it detects it doesnt show the folder names(normally it should be like 100CANON etc.)
Is there something wrong with my camera?

No, it's functioning "as designed". The DR is a USB 1.1 device, so has a theoretical max. of 12 Mb/sec (that's Megabits, not Megabytes), if there's nothing else on the USB bus with it (and likely much less in actual practice). You don't say whether you were using Zoom Browser to transfer the files or not; Canon cameras generally won't show the folders during a file transfer operation. For both these reasons, many of us use USB 2.0 CF card readers. They're cheap (under $20), much faster and more versatile.

Your transfer time is normal,. the port on the camera is USB-1,.. and to top it off,. cameras tend to be slower than even USB-1 speeds.
You can speed things along by getting a USB-2 or a firewire card reader. Either will take full advantage of your cards maximum speed. Just get one to match whatever posrts you have on your PC.
Sandisk makes three grades of cards, "normal" "Ultra" and "Extreme"
If your card does not say "Ultra" or "Extreme" on it,. then you have the garden variety ho hum speed card,.. which is fine really for your camera as even when writing,. it can not take full advantage of a true high speed card.
Still,. a card reader should help with download times.

25 minutes for 230MB? Is it really normal?
It takes a lot, a LOT less using a USB1.1 card reader.

Well thats what i was thinking too cmM :( but the others seem to have a different opinion.Downloading the pics with ZoomBrowser makes no difference .Anyways my San Disk is the one with red and blue colors on it  (so the normal one i suppose), i was asking because the guys from the place that i bought it told me it was high-speed.(do you know what speed the card reads/writes ? i couldnt find it anywhere)
CyberDyne your saying that the internal transfer rates are limited by the camera's memory controllers or something and not by the card?So if i ever buy a true high speed card for this camera it wont improve anything will it?
I also attached an image so show you what i meant when a said that the folder name is not shown.

According to Rob Galbraith's database, that is the second slowest card on the market for your camera... the salesguy lied to you.

no, actually he was an idiot so tehnically he didn't lie
But it doesn't matter if it is slow because my camera can;t handle bigger speeds anyway...right?

...like cyberdine said

I have the same transfer speed directly from my rebel. I'm using 12x lexar. Takes 30 mins to transfer 256 mb...
With 1.1 cardreader, it takes around 5 mins to transfer 250 megs.
Another reason you want a card reader is because the battery usually dies during the transfer. I don't know why, but it does... and it may lead you to think that you transferred all of the images, while some of them are left on the card.
Bottom line:
Get a cardreader.

First time I downloaded from a 300D was direct from the camera to PC.....121 RAW files took 75 minutes:rolleyes::rolleyes:
So I fitted a 2.0 USB card to the PC and got a cardreader......now a 1 Gb card takes 2-3 minutes:D

You're getting about the same performance (or lack thereof) as I get. Don't worry, it is a normal although very poor 1Mbit/s. If you're really bothered about it then the card readers recommended by the others here will help. I just go put the coffee on and read the paper.

And Rob Galbraith's CF database is here (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007).

Yes Gogu,. definitley check out the RG Database,.
You camera can not take full advantage of a fast cards speed,. but that does not mean you have to use the 2nd slowest card your camera can use either :)
There may be some reasonably priced cards on the database list that will give an incremental speed boost over the slow Sandisk.
(in fact when I first replied,. I did not realize just how SLOW that card is in your camera.. it's pretty bad :( )
And yet,. even if you invest in the very fastest card made,. you can only barely double the speed...
For instance, a transcend card will give roughly an 80% speed boost over your current card,. and can be found online at pretty reasonable prices.
Here's a direct link to the Rebel page of the database.

I bought a 1GB "standard" sandisk for ~300USD when they were new. When I bought my 300D I was like cool, dont even have to buy a mem card. LOL Now I dred when my Lexar 256 40x card fills. But I have a 2GB Lexar 80x on the way
