Just a quick question. I just checked out the price for the Canon 50mm 1.8 on the B&H site. Are the prices including or excluding taxes? If it's excluding taxes then how much is tax normally?
It's such a cheap lens I might just buy it if I get the chance while I'm coming over.

If you buy it at the store I would think that you will have to pay sales tax. I do not know what it is in New York but I would guess it's somewhere around 8%

No sales tax when B&H ship out of the state. If You buy in the store they add sales tax which I think is 7%.

8-5/8% according to New York Pub. 718, New York State Sales and Use Tax Rates by Jurisdiction. That would apply to in-store (or shipped to a NYC address) purchases. If it's shipped elsewhere in New York State, it'll differ by locality. They don't include tax on shipments out of state.

There is no tax in my state, so we don't pay a tax to buy from B&H. Are you only planning on visiting New York?

So definitely not more than 10% then. Cool. Thanks people! The imported version is $69.95 and the US $74.95. Do you think that's the general price out on the market? I might pick it up in a regular store or a friend do it.

In a smaller store, the price might be as much as fifteen percent higher. The bigger problem is that a smaller store is not likely to carry it.

I ran into this problem here in Richmond, and while on vacation in Seattle and Washington, D.C., both times looking for that lens. B&H was the only place I was able to get one.

Call me boring, but I don't want to pay online with my card! That's why I am hoping to find it in a regular store. Unless I can get my friend to pay by cheque...

There are a couple of states in the U.S. that don't levy sales tax. They are Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Hope this helps.

There is a much greater chance of the waiter in your local restaurant copying down your card number than someone online stealing it! :-)

Yep, I know. That's why I normally pay cash! ;)
