I ordered a 4 pack of color gels so i could play with them before i bought any more. i will probably order more now in quite a few different colors. These pictures were just quick snaps of my daughter Josie who was not too thrilled about getting her pics taken AGAIN lol. I just popped her up on a table real quick and shot a few. These were taken with a gray background with an AB 800 as the background light with the gel on it, set at about 3/4 power.

You attach the color gel to the front end of the background light. I used a gray background and shot on 3/4 power. Gray is typically the best color to use. If you use white, you have to shoot on a lower power so it doesnt wash the color out. You need to pull your subject away from your background light so the light doesnt spill on them. You can actually get a 4 pack of color gels on ebay for 4.99. Comes with Yellow, blue, green and red. that is what I did. I didnt want to spend a whole lot on them until i made sure i liked them. I will probably buy a bigger pack of them now though.

I don't know that I would have said this without actually seeing them but the yellow background is my favorite given that color combination. Great job.

You should bust them out and use them. If nothing else, it will give you something fun to play with and try. What i like is with every different backdrop you put up, you get a different effect.

Great shots.. just out of curiosity what sort of light and power wise are you using for the background light? Was it on the ground pointing up behind the baby or to the side? Whenever I've experimented with gels its never worked as I wanted so I'm curious to learn :)

I used an AB800 for background light to the side of the backdrop pointing to the middle. I had it on about 3/4th power on these shots and was using a gray background. I had the baby about 3.5 to 4 feet away from the background. The light spread across pretty even all over. I used a brown muslin last night with the color gels and turned the power down to a little under 1/2 power and the colors looked more saturated and darker toned than these. These look a bit neon"ish" to me, but with a darker backdrop and turned down some, they were richer colors. I posted a couple of more shots with the brown backdrop, i think they are still on this first page of all the posts, so you might check them out.

Awesome thank you for that. I have a feeling the light I was using was not powerful enough as it didnt light up much of the background.. I also have grey paper.
