Comments, criticisms, etc welcome. For media this was a great event - although I heard that the spectators became a bit unruly due to some delays in the event and not enough "filler" entertainment for the crowd. Either way, enjoy the pix - and feel free to post them wherever you like so long there is a link back to my website.
If anyone is interested in high res, or wishes to contact me for additional use of these photos, feel free to email me at: friscomgm AT yahoo.com
Thanks!

AMAZING shots...There is no doubt about it, those are magazine quality...if I wear you I would send those in. I'm a drifter myself (not D1, or any major events) and for those of you who aren't familiar with it...it's an amazing thrill, and takes an incredible amount of talent to be able to maneuver a car like that, especially at that level. Those shots you took show great angles these guys are taking and you can tell the speeds they're taking them at.
If you don't send these shots in...tisk tisk tisk on you!

They really are fantastic photos!
Note, I told another Kiwi on another forum his drifting photos were magazine worthy, so he submitted some shots, and got them published :)
Those are also deffinitly print worthy.
and takes an incredible amount of talent to be able to maneuver a car like that,
No more than any other form of motorsport.
The cars are built to be driven sideways, front and rear suspenions are rebuilt to allow extreme levels of wheel lock, and reduce traction at the back, and the engines are tuned to be very responsive, and brakes etc are all tuned to make the cars very unstable, and easy to throw around.
There is still a lot of skill involved, but its not as much as people like to think, they certianly arn't driving gods.

nice shots! can i ask you something abt panning? what shutter speeds were you using to create that effect? and are you using a monopod? coz i got a few shots of my own i used 1/125 mostly, here's some samples. in at general admission so i shoot from the stands only. any info would be helpful. also how do you get media passes so you can go and shoot closer? do you have to be a pro to be able shoot on that area?

All i have to say is... give anybody one of those cars and tell them to swing it sideways at 40+ mph and sit back, eat some popcorn and count the walls they hit. Yes they do set those cars up specifically for drifting and only drifting, but controlling it is very hard. And i'm not talking about your average joe schmoe (like myself) that goes out drifting every now and then for thrills, that isn't a whole lot of talent... But the guys like Ken Gushi, and Rhyes Millan are very talented. I also drag race a 93' Turbo Supra, and drifting my 240 is more difficult then drag racing. And before i'm chewed out, yes they are WAY different sports and both take practice and must be timed precisively. But let's face it, either way you look at it...it's tough, and I don't know who you'd consider to be a "Driving God" (unless we're talking about Mike Schumacher...Don't argue about that one lol his record will prove you wrong) but these guys are the best at what they do, and it takes a hell of alot of skill to throw a car around like that and have complete control.

take practice and must be timed precisively.
Just like any other form of motorsport. :D
Put any competant race driver, amature or pro, in a purpose built drift car and they will be able to put on a similar display.
Drifting is not that hard. It looks spectacular, but dosn't require any unique or special set of skills.

To each his own...But one question... Have you ever been drifting?

Nice shots!
On the topic of drifting, it isn't too difficult to drift about really. But precision drifting like those guys on the pix require skills.

A good collection of images.
But number 3 would have been the perfect shot if those bales weren't there. :(

down_shift: For panning it reaaaaally depends on what I am shooting and where I am shooting to determine my shutter speed - I go from 1/30th to 1/125th often.
Media passes are available for individuals on assignment (like myself). I was shooting for Sport Z Magazine, AZ240SX.org, and JTuned.com, amongst a few other places. Generally most people who gain photo access are pros.
