I'd appreciate it if somebody could explain this to me please.
On a recent trip with my new 20D I shot almost 200 images in raw+jpg mode. When I got home I uploaded them to the PC (I use the peer-to-peer mode) and when I saw two files for each image on the PC, I went ahead and formatted the CF card because I need to use it again.
To my horror I later discovered that the camera had uploaded 2 identical jpgs of each image. No .CR2s!! I really wanted those RAWs to do dynamic range compensation on many of the images.
Can anybody tell me whether this is a known fault ?

I don't know for sure what you're calling "peer-to-peer" mode. I do know that you can't download raw+jpeg properly directly from the camera--you have to use a card reader. Canon doesn't fully support using the camera as a "mass storage device" under Windows (and maybe not on a Mac either).

Yes.. If you're using the camera wizard in Windows XP to list the images on your camera, you won't see RAW files or THM files..
The fault lies with Windows.. The protocol they use is generic.. It's meant to be used with all digital cameras.. Unfortunately, all features for all cameras aren't supported. In the case of WinXP, a CR2 file isn't recognized as a valid image format. Because the protocol is hard coded, there's nothing you can do to change it.
If you don't have a card reader, you'll have to use the software Canon supplied on the disk that came with your camera to download CR2 files.....

Thanks for your comments guys. In fact I regularly use peer-to-peer (P2P on the menu and then connecting the camera brings up the WinXP scanner&camera wizard) for .CR2 files and it works fine. The only difference this time is that I used the RAW+JPG mode instead of just plain RAW.
I had always assumed that in raw+jpg mode the camera would store two files, one raw and one jpg. I can only conclude that there must be something about this mode that fools Windows into saving the .CR2 file as a JPG. This is disappointing because in the field I like to use a laptop to check I got the focus and depth-of-field correct. I guess I'll need to find a 'lightweight' raw converter to run on the laptop, but its a lot of mucking about just for a quick check of each image.

Just a thought...Does one of them have a larger file size?
If so, and if windows renamed them, what would happen if you renamed the larger of them back to CR2???

I upgraded from the 300D to the 20D, and the old Canon software didn't copy the CR2 files over. I upgraded the software and it worked fine. I use DIM to download the images now, it's reliable and has other useful features.

Just get a card reader. They are world's faster than hooking up the camera to the computer. The only camera I ever connect to the computer is the MKII for changing PFs. Otherwise, unless shooting tethered, there's no logical reason to connect camera to computer.

It does. I haven't had the issue you described with my 20D. Have you tried it again since your initial problem?

I've now had the chance to install the Canon software and as expected, it does allow me to extract the .cr2 file and the .jpg file when the image was shot in 'raw+jpg' mode. The software shows the image as one .cr2 file, but when I download it, a jpg version also comes down. I guess the jpg must be somehow linked to the .cr2 in such a way that Windows interprets it as 2 identical jpgs.
Anyway, thanks for the information. I've added a card reader to my shopping list.
