Following the direction found on Flickrs Poor Man’s Macro group (http://flickr.com/groups/poor_mans_macro/discuss/72157606260937501/) I built a quick reversal rig for my 20D. The deal is easy. Take one unneeded body cap, hollow out, glue on one unneeded filter ring, attach to body, screw on lens backwards, go take photos.
My current setup is a 52mm filter ring allowing me to use my old FD mount 50mm f/1.8. Focusing is useless as you’re only working with a few millimeters at best. I’ve been hand holding everything and things are hit and miss. I’m learning how much I move while I’m hitting the shutter release. I think this also might explain some of my focus issues in the past.
It looks like I’ll also be able to add a second ring to this current setup allowing me to use my FD 28-80mm.

one note i would add... while working with superglue you want to make sure it is DRY. I placed a brick ontop of the cap/ring combo and let it dry over night. failure to do so can ruin your lens with glue vapors...

Somewhat new to DSLR photography here so please excuse my ignorance. What would be the reasoning or advantage to this modification? What would be the reason to mount a lens backwards?

done. i turned that off for some reason. got that re-enabled yesterday

how close to the bee were you?

not too close... I've not actually paid attention to how close I have to be to objects as I've been shooting handheld. somewhere between 4-6 inches I'd say

The reason is to get up close and person macro's. This can be done a number of different ways - macro lenses, diopters, etc. This modification can be done for free - most people have the parts to do this already.

I bought a 52 and a 58 off ebay . They came yesterday . Same problem - hand held focusing was easier using back and forth motion . Used 52 one on my 50 mm
I was trying to take pictures of 3 red bugs on a piece of scotch tape . They are about the size of the head of a straight pin . the glue kind cover and distorted the critter .
I tried blowing up in photo shop - no good . I am going to be watching ebay for 55 , 62 , 72 and 77 ones

I'd be carefull carrying around this set-up. Wouldn't want any broken lenses. I just might try this out.

Fortunately FD mount 50mm are practically a dime a dozen.
