Gimbal joint?

I've got a 5D with a 100-400L lens. It weighs 5 lbs. I want a ballhead for a light, travel tripod.

I've been told to look for a tripod head with a gimbal function like the Acratech GV2. Why would a Markins Q3 or a the new Q3Tr not work? Is it the weight of the lens?

Dunno about the Markins but I can highly recommend the GV2.

I use it with the 1D and 300+1.4 and it is great, well balanced and nice and lightweight.

The GV2 is a very cool looking head.

I have the Q3 and it works fine with 1D+70-200 f2.8 - a little more weight than your combo.

Sorry.. didn't read it correctly. I don't know if the Q3 can be used with a Gimbal. Just a straight head, it's fine. That combo is not that heavy for a Gimbal.
