I have a G5 and would like to move up to something a bit better. I am either going to get a REbel XT (when it comes out) or a 20D....

Here is the thing....My dream is to do photography, mostly outside shots, portraits, family portraits, newborn portraits, pictures of my kids softball games, cub scouts....I like to play with macro as well.....

So my question?? Will I ever NEED what the 20D offers over the XT???? Anyone??

Thanks!

Misty

No, you won't need it. The main advantage is really the dial on the back of the 20D, and maybe the stronger body, the rest's pretty similar. In your place i'd get the XT, however, I got the 20D because I like to have the best (not counting the 1 series models).

A major part of what steered me to the 20D was the quick turn on time and short lag time. Also important to me was the faster continuous shooting speed and greater number of shots in a single burst. However, these may not be important to you. I also liked the build of the camera. Mirror lock up was also an influence. These options may not be worth the extra cost for some.

Most all of those with exception of fps and buffer, the XT will give you too

My bad. I accidently looked at the Digital Rebel specs, not the XT. The XT was not available when I bought my 20D.

Thanks for correcting me.

I was 2 days away from ordering a 20D when the XT was announced. I knew I wanted (needed?) more than the DRebel, but the 20D was more $$$ than I really wanted to drop and probably more than I needed feature-wise.

There are comparisons of the two to be found. See what the 20D offers over the XT and decide if the need/cost is worth it for you personally. For me it wasn't.

Already preordered the XT :)

I'd also get the Rebel XT (350D) for the purposes you mentioned. For the price difference get one of those white-with-that-cool-red-stripe L lenses (for example, the Canon EF 70-200 f/4L would be extremely useful when shooting kids playing some football outside) ;)

Moving up from the G5, you must go for the 350(XT). It will be much lighter on your neck and on your wallet than the 20D, but is just as heavy a performer.

Misty ...

how come you only have one post?
If I remember correctly, I've seen you around in the G series forum before... but then, this might only be my Alzheimer speaking

From the feature point of view ... I totally agree with the other posters that you might most likely benefit more from spending the price difference on a nice L lens (17-40/4.0 or 70-200/4.0 come to mind).

On the other hand ... go to a photography shop and pick up both of them. If they don't have the DRebel XT, maybe take a look at the black DRebel.

When the DRebel was announced, I also eagerly awaited it, did the comparisons and decided that I would not need to spend some 500$ more on a bit more flexibility in the 10D.

However, when i compared the two cameras in a photography shop, the feel of the 10D was much nicer for me compared to the DRebel. Now this might have been due to the silver plastic (which you don't have on the DRebel XT, if you order the black one), but for me it was important enough. My feeling was that when I spend $1000 on a camera, it should also feel like it.

But that might just be me. So take a look at it and if you're happy with it, by all means buy it. It surely is a great camera.

Best regards,
Andy

Andy you've got a good memory! ;) I wondered the same thing about just having one post...I pretty sure that this was my username, don't know why it shows I only have one post, I know I've posted more then that, also posted pictures a while ago....

Thank you so much everyone for the information, I love that link! See, I'm normally a sahm (stay at home mom *of 4*) and the girl that I babysit for every now and then opened up a little gift shop. She's only paying me minumum wage (5.15) but I get to bring my daughter who isn't in school yet to work with me and work whenever I want or not. So I decided that I would start saving up for a new camera! I'm at about $550 now, not looking like I'll be there for a couple months, but am excited as I get closer and closer! So if I get the XT, then I'll just get it with the kit and start saving again for the lense! I'm mainly interested in a lense for portraits, so which one would be my best choice?

I do also dislike that the XT isn't going to use the same battery! That sucks! I have two cannon batteries for my G5 and was hoping to use that.

Oh well I will probably go into Wolf or something and play around and see which one I like better like someone suggested!

Misty,

for a good portrait lens that doesn't break the bank, look at the 75 $ 50/1.8!

There's a review (http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/ef50/) comparing it to its more expensive brother.

There also is a Forum member recommended portrait lens thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=58577) where it was voted to place #2 (while being the least expensive lens by far).

Best regards,
Andy

Have a look at this:

The Bob Atkins article is based on press releases, not on actual experience with the 350D.

Hold both cameras in your hand before you mail order anything. You need to find out which one is more comfortable for you to hold. Then figure out which one will searve your purpose..
