Tried another DPHDR. This time didn't touch any of the settings and
none of the preview screens with the mouse or dials to see if any
of the color bands (mentioned in this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=602120)) would show up.
Viola, no bands! It must be happening when clicking in the little preview
windows with the mouse or something, that's when I noticed them first.

These were 4 shot HDRs tweaked with ACR and PS3.

this one with a levels layer and too much sharpening:

this one with levels, hue/saturation, and selective color layers:

please critique!

this one is before I got my hands on it and ruined it in PP and actually shows the scene more of how I recall. Early morning before the sun broke through the cloud cover:

I like the last one the best, but it could use a little touch of exposure or Gamma adjustments in CS3 to brighten it up a bit. Maybe levels.

Open CS3, go to File>Open As. In the window that opens, go to the bottom dropdown and choose Camera RAW out of the long list of choices, it's near the top. That opens in ACR so you can use the sliders. Just click on the Exposure carat and tap the right key til it start to lighten up. Then the Blacks carat and give it one or two taps. You will see it get better as you tap. That's all you need to do to that one, maybe sharpen it a bit.

How many photos did you use to put together the HDR....
I am starting to play with HDR a little and am curious...

I agree the third is the bes of the three, maybe just a tad brigther to make it pop a little.

How many photos did you use to put together the HDR.
I originally took 7, but only used 4 in this shot for this DynamicphotoHDR program.
I viewed them in DPP and selected the 4 I wanted and converted them to .tif, saved them to another folder for my test. I should have just used the .cr2 files, I don't know what I was
thinking at the time :)

as Canonloader recommended, I set exposure to +1, blacks 6, and used recovery 15 to get my clipping back in line, in ACR.

ah, that's better!

Now is that better or what? That's beautiful. Did you see what that blacks slider did? Really neat how it makes the image come off the flats and show some actual depth, heh? I have set a new default in ACR, so the sliders jump to my settings when I load a new image. Exposure is 0, Recovery is 17. It seems to make the image less noisy right off. Fill Lights are about 10, blacks are 5, Brightness is 45 and contrast is about 35. I have found this to be the closest to a good place to start with most daylight images. Temperature is set to 5250 and tint to 0. Most images will need a little adjustment, but just a little. I also change Exposure first, then do the blacks last. That's my workflow.

By the way, the 40D just got here and works like a champ. They replaced the bottom CPB, the main board inside. :)

yep, and if I could just keep my fingers off all the other controls and sliders, I might just be alright some day

glad to hear it, that's good news, sounds like it's time to play!!! :)
