Oh man, I am sitting here with my Canadian GP tickets in hand, just waiting for June to roll around.
GO Fernando!
Hey Tom, can you please turn on PM or e-mail? I want to ask you about something.

I know this is a very novice question, but what does it take to get a media pass and take pics of the pits and infield rather than from general admission?
I'll probably be pulling a job with the local paper over the summer, would that count :D :D
I know that at some venues they let you tour the pits on Thursday if you have a weekend pass, but i'm talking about qualifying and raceday.

Soniczoom................You need to pretty much be with A/P, Sports Illustrated or Getty to get any access to F1, Nascar or any big name sporting. Shooting for them is not easy. They want a very good portfolio, and as far as all the responses I have gotten from them, some form of formal education in photography or media or something in that area. You also need to work your way up. My school has placements at Getty after you graduate..........I'm going to try my luck becoming an editor, then work my way up.
Moon racer, I have been to champcar a couple times, F1 is a whole differnt animal. I have full paddock and puit access this year at the Molson indy.

Thanks for the comments everyone, wish I had a media pass as well.
I am going to the F1 GP will post any good pics. It will be hard getting any good pics as there is a 200mm lens restriction for the public (me). The fences here in Melbourne are to high to shoot over and you are too far away from the mesh fence to shoot through it very well.

and just how do they propose to police that? Most security staff wouldn't know what focal length a camera lens was if it jumped up and bit them on the bum. Take your 200mm and slip the TC in your pocket.
If the F1 circus starts that nonsense at Silverstone it'll be the last time they see me. I find the whole "formula numb" event boring enough already... being forced to ponce about with a short lens would be the end of it.

Our security guards can read. I am taking a 1.4x TC with me. Last year I hired a 300mm 2.8 L and managed to talk my way past the security at the gate, But as soon as I took it out at the track it was spotted by a security guard and I had a argument with him, his supervisor and race control.
It's a ridiculous rule as a lot of new P&S and digital video cameras have a longer focal length than 200mm but it's the guy with some nice photographic equipment who suffers. I understand the professional photographers point of view about this, but it’s not like we are taking photos from the same positions they can get to.

They can read? I'm impressed. Most of ours haven't quite mastered the grunt yet. Is that with or without moving their lips?
If any pros are afraid of what you can shoot from the stands then they should trade their SLRs in for point and shoots. I suspect it's more something to do with the event organisers than the photographers although their reasons escape me for the moment.
As you say, many point and shoot cameras have lenses with focal length equivalent of more than 200mm... perhaps there's a discrimination case against the event organisers there?

Good photos of the street parade.
They'll be banning cameras next at F1 unless they are disposable ones without any advertising on!
Totally agree with you Cadwell - F1 is now boring and we prefer Touring Cars.

Tom
Many thanks for sharing these with us, well done.
I think its really sad the world over when such restrictions are imposed for whatever reason, at these public events. albeit on private land i guess.
as you so rightly point out the numbers of people using point & shoot or video cams with longer zooms than a 200mm must surely be in the thousands.
I hope this does not happen here in the UK .
I would think your in street captures are about the closest anyone is likely to get moving F1 cars
Cheers

I LOVE these pictures. Funny story... at the Canadian Grand Prix, they had a photography booth (on scaffolding) set-up at the finish line sponsored by NI**N. I stood in line for an hour and when I got up there they said I couldn't use my 300D. "Why not?" I asked. "You can't use any product except NI**N". They told me I could leave my camera with my friends and try one of their display models with my memory card!!!! I couldn't believe my ears. I told her if they are confident in their product, why would she worry about what I was using. Needless to say, on reason of principle, I did not use their gear to take any photo's and continued on my way. For this reason alone, I will never use their products.
On a more important note... Hopefully Williams will climb back to the top (and over Ferarri) this year. I had my first opportunity to attend and try to shoot some pictures at the Canadian Grand Prix last year. Most of the track is "double fenced" so it's impossible to get a clear view. This is one of the few clear shots I got (from a distance) with my EF 75-300mm.
Good luck at the race T_O_M. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to what you get at the race.

Very nice Tom..very impressive...i think L glass on a Canon is needed..i don't think my 90-300mm USM would be sharper enough for the Indy at the Goldy..But i very keen to give it a go and your photos have giving me some angle ideas..fantastic shots....

It will be hard getting any good pics as there is a 200mm lens restriction for the public (me). .
Do you know if that is just a restriction for the Australian GP or is it some F1 rule?

Must be a a circuit only rule as a mate of mine was weilding a 500mm f4 at Silverstone last year.
