View Full Version : Fill Flash and Spot Metering

I prefer to use the 50D's spot metering almost exclusively and shoot in manual mode. I've only recently gotten my first Canon Speedlite, the 580 EX II. One of things I want to be able to do well is daylight fill flash.

As I understand it, the camera reads the exposure of the over all scene, exposes properly for it in AV to TV mode, and throws out just enough flash to light the main subject. In spot mode, however, will the camera even know what the proper exposure of the scene should be? Do I need to change to evaluative or some other mode everytime I want to shoot fill flash?

Thanks.

I don't ever use spot metering but I believe the camera will switch to Evaluative when a flash is connected in ETTL.

Try it since you already have the speedlight.

Someone can confirm or correct that ?
