I know, I know, I shouldnt make fun, but we know that Canada is known to be all perfect, but it actually sucks!
After I made my last post at 1am on the board, I went out to my car to get my stuff out because I forgot it when I came home from a hockey(where I also met Cujo, who brought his kid to play some playoff game). Well, the window was bashed in, the guy rummaged through the front, popped the trunk and got a real awesome present.............tons of L glass and a 1DMKII.
I don't think he was looking for that stuff, but It's my fault to a point.
Anyway, The cop said that chances are slim anything will show up, so he gave me a copy of his report and said that I should give my insurance company a call in the morning.
I have a charity celebrity hockey game to shoot on Friday and I have no equipment except for the 10D and the Tamron..........great, I aint shooting with that combo. I hope my insurance can at least get me the 70-200 back for now................I can bare with the 10D and Tamron for school assignments for now.
I'm so pissed off, thank god our my school made us get camera insurance, I also made sure that mine had "for business" in the policy, maybe I can get a payout very soon.
If you guys see any cheap equipment selling out of Toronto that fits the description of the equipment listed in my sig, let me know.
Cheers, Ill go punch some stuff some more.

How truly awful ! I see you don’t think the person was looking for that specifically This person(s) may have seen you carry camera equipment to and from your vehicle - Seems very much a crime of opportunity and some who knew they could get $$ for it. I will keep my fingers crossed for you that the insurance replaces it fast.
Is there any place near by you have rental status with ? I have rented from Vistek ( 496 Queen St. East 365-1777 ) in past emergency situations when in TO. :(

Jeez, man. Bummer. Hope the insurance comes through quick. (And now I know I need to get around to adding the 24-70 and the 580EX to the policy.)
The first bag out of the car when I leave it is the photo gear. Then the computers (yes, "s", never just one) if they were along. I pack it that way.

Sorry to hear that some butthead (thinking of worse names) stole your equipment. I would be sick and SOOOO pissed. If I found that someone was breaking into my stuff, I would probably be the one in trouble because I would pound the living crap out of them.
Not sure this would help but have you thought of posting S/Ns of your stolen equipment? Also, is there anyway to alert places like eBay that they may get stolen equipment posted on thier site?
I hope you get back to normal soon.

Persian,
good that you had your gear insured!
Pretty stupid to leave that stuff in the car, actually
Were you never taught that after the assignment, you first take care of your gear, and then of yourself?
That's something they teach you in armies ... and I think it's good advice. You live and learn.
You might think of entering the serial numbers in the photo.net stolen equipment database. Not that I think it will help a lot, but you never know.
Best regards,
Andy
PS: My wallet was pickpocketed some time ago on a travel. Didn't lose much, about 300$ in cash.
However, they used my ATM card to buy stuff in supermarkets and electronic stores (works similar to a credit card in Europe) that don't have online connection to verify a stolen card for a total of about $ 5000. I didn't have to pay for that, as I immediately reported my card stolen.
Still, it bugged me to no end to think that some creep could profit $ 5000 from picking my wallet. I think I know how you feel, even if your insurance covers it.

Thanks for the kind words, I am really upset, since both the 1D MkII and the 70-200 were pretty new.
Insurance company has said that they have to send an agent over and also see an actual copy of the police repost, but they said that it usually takes 2 weeks to get me a cheque. If that is the case, I will go rent a 70-200 f/2.8, but renting is expensive in Canada, I think the 70-200 is around $100/day.........
I usually park my car in the garage, since it's a sports coupe and its a risk on its own. Unfortunately, I got home late and didnt want to open the garage, people were sleeping in the house...............
Anyway, I will never let my equipment out of my sight ever again.
PS Delhi, I shoot near the Cachet in Markham and live in Bayview Hill in Richmond Hill.......... Crime is not really normal here, I guess these areas are a target because there are lots nice cars and whatnot.

Persian, sorry to hear about this. When I used to live in Brooklyn, N.Y. (one of the five boroughs, in fact, the largest of the five) my telephone rang around four in the morning. I answered it and a voice on the other end asked me if I owned a Volvo 740 Turbo. I did and I said Yes, how do you know? They said, you better come down right away, someone broke into your car and trashed the whole interior. I asked them how they knew it was my car. They said the guy threw the contents of the glove box out on the street and they found a receipt from a servicing I had done at the dealer that had my name and number. While it sounded legit, I was not about to go downstairs at 4 in the morning. I figured it could have been a setup just to get me. paranoia will destroy ya, as the song says.
So, I told my wife and we went back to a fitful sleep. In the morning, I got up, went downstairs and around the corner, and indeed, multiple windows were smashed and many things were stolen. Live and learn.
I've always said that if something is stolen, I'm grateful that it was not a direct holdup of my person.

Sorry about your loss. With automobile insurance, the company will pay for a rental. With homeowners, they will pay for a place to live if yours in uninhabitable. Camera insurance should pay for rental while they dally, especially since you specified "business use". Hold out for it. Good luck.

PR, this is awful - I'm sorry for you and your equipment. It really sucks ! I know how you must feel - I got my car windows broken twice : once they stole the radio (right in front of my parents house in a middle of a day ! ) and the second time the scums stole the loudspeakers. It doesn't equal the cost of your equipment, but the feeling that you got robbed and your property got stolen and broken is about the same I guess ... :(

Badbakht....
Two thoughts.....
1) We should create a group insurance here and allow people to apply based upon their e-community service as a background check.....
and...
2) Someone should have invented a Lo Jack like system to plant in your camera bag so it can be tracked.
Start searching the web everyone....
lets see what we can come up with.
Perhaps some kind of cellphone ignited self destruct so at least the bastards get what they deserve.
Perhaps a bag that has an alarm when opened, takes a picture of the person opening it and emails it to you instantly so you can hunt him down....
Perhaps a bag with a motion sensor that sirens when moved and can only be deactivated by the person holding the RF deactivator key.
I'm on a roll here. If anyone does this stuff I want my cut!

Shocker Alarming Briefcase
$714
The Shock Briefcase is designed to protect your important documents, valuables, and equipment from theft. This fine grain leather briefcase is discreetly fitted with an impenetratable security force field. When you set down your briefcase, even for a minute, simply arm the system with the pocket-sized remote control. If the case is picked up or disturbed, it sounds a piercing alarm and becomes energized with over 40,000 volts of shock-power. It will be impossible for any thief to continue to hold or carry the briefcase. If the case is snatched while you are carrying it unarmed, a simple push of a button on the remote will activate the system and cause the would-be-thief to instantly release the case. Can you afford to be without security of this magnitude?

That's true - I've always enjoyed my trips to Canada. I've been to various parts of Ontario a few times - great country and great people. I will admit though that it would take a lot to get me to move from where I'm at now.

Nothing else taken. ! Such pain and agony. I had just finished purchasing the 10D and several L glass types, flash, Cf cards etc. $5,000 US worth. Insurance was not as sweet as it had been represented to me when I bought it. They ended up paying about 2/3 of my replacement cost. It was represented as being replacement cost insurance too. So it goes, Its all history now. The police were sympathetic, but only good was, had the police report for the insurance company. I wish you the very best of luck in getting everything replaced. I know they say widespread poverty is a major contributor to crime. That explains Eastern Europe, Africa, South America, Asia. Thats the problem though, these supposed "great nations" sit in the middle and even on top of the worst places on the face of this planet when it comes to crime.

As for poverty...
It always amazed me. The social/municipal planning and engineering of such regions as Bronx...
If you happen to live there, and have a kid... What are the options?
1) To keep him locked up all his life to isolate him from the street life?
2) To let him "go out and play", knowing what the envionment is gonna do to him?

my advice for something that is stolen is to like check ebay throughout the week and look for recrntly added auctions similar to ur equipment, and if they are coming from Toronto, u can get the police to investigate that.
Bets are once the thief sees the size of the cam and all the fancy equipment he will most likely try to get a quote and sell it, and once a buddy of mine had his 20D stolen, then the next day 2 people from toronto posted a 20D on ebay, and the cops investigated and one of the guys was the thief so hes in jail now and my buddy has his gear back. So its a possibility. Low chance but worth a try

Persian ... First off I'm in Toronto and would like say Yo how you doing. I don't have insurance on my stuff, but # one rule, never leave anything in site in your car anywhere. I bring my notebook and camera with me everywhere and I find a a good napsake from henreys does the trick.
Bro I will keep my eyes open for your ****. Man that is a pretty hard lose and personally I think people that steal **** are just lame and don't realize the hard work and time that we put into our equipement. For some reason you get really attached this stuff and it just ripps your heart out... if they only knew.
Oh well take care

I hate being robbed! Happened once years ago. Now I don't care.. Go ahead and steal my 1-2 or 3 year old gear. :) I got real good insurance and by the end of the week I will have all NEW stuff. I would hate to lose any "good" pictures I had taken though! If there were any... :) :)

How did the Richmond PD respond? I had my truck broken into a few years back on North Boulevard in the Fan, they didn't do a damn thing. Granted, having one of the highest murder rates in the country might have something to do with that, but...
