My 580EX does something weird.
Setup:
New batteries, charged up
Turn switch on
Mode etting is ETTL
Procedure:
I push the red light to test
Symptom:
It does a prolonged bright flash instead of a "pop" flash and it flickers and you can hear a little "bzzzzzing"
Other symptoms:
It does seem to meter ok on my 5D...snap a shot and the flash works and I can put it into M mode and decrease the power according ly.
Anyone see this before...ideas???

Sounds like you have the 'Red light' button set to fire the Modeling flash which is not default. Check C.Fn-10 on the 580 and set to default (0)

Thanks for the reply.
That was one of the first things I did and it is set to default on CFn-10.
It seems to have a mind of it's own. And I never in my feeble memory changed it.
Is there a way to do a re-set on the unit so it goes back to being "dumb".

Sounds like you have it in strob-o-photic mode or whatever it's called.
(Sorry, can't remember the name of it.)

m34dpwr you're thinking of stroboscopic (MULTI) mode. If its in ETTL mode, its not in stroboscopic.
The "prolonged" flash may occur if its firing at full power?
And the "bzzzz" you hear is the flash recharging its capacitors. That's normal.

Yeah, that's it.
When it stroboscopic mode on mine makes a buzzing noise when used.
I figured worth a shot...
