This has been a really confusing part on my camera research...which uv filters to buy. Some questions I still have unanswered:

1. Which ones are threaded/will work with my lenscaps?
2. Which ones are the best for the money?
3. Will they make a big difference in outside shots (I use PS for post processing)?
4. I'm extremely careful with my lenses and use lens hoods...do I still need filters?

With that said, can anyone steer me into the right direction considering the lenses in my siggy?

so far I;ve only used one brand ... Calumet. Threaded, can put the caps on top of them (but I think this is true with all the filters).
Now for protection only, single coated will work fine. I use multicoated filters as they eliminate haze, actually improving the image a little (supposably). But the main purpose is protection. I use hoods as well, but I still think filters are a must have.

EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM = 72 mm size filter
EF 50mm f/1.8 II =52 mm size filter ( ;) typo corrected )
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM = 77mm size filter

the sizes are listed along the side of the lens.

EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM = 72 mm size filter
EF 50mm f/1.8 II =58 mm size filter
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM = 77mm size filter

the sizes are listed along the side of the lens.
Actually, that would be a 52mm filter ;)

I use lens hoods too, but filters are nice for those times when your hoods not on.......I have stuck with Hoya filters. So far they have been good to me......

Canon sells UV filters. That is what I use.

I found this Canon review site a little while ago (probably from this forum). There is a page on filters that is a good quick read...

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/B+W-UV-Filter.aspx

Down the page you can click on any of the listed lenses or cameras for a review on each. It would seem this is one person's viewpoint so take it at that.

Some filters are not threaded on the outer side--that is, the inside of the ring which is on the outside when installed on the lens--and so will not accomodate some lens caps. They are sometimes thinner to help eliminate vignetting on wider angle shots.

Some thinset filters do have outer threads to allow stacking (using more than one type of filter at the same time).

I like very good quality (Hoya HMC, multicoated) filters. Many people do not feel they are necessary.

What do you want to accomplish by using a filter? Protection of the lens, color correction, enhancement, or something else? That information will help determine what you should do.
