With a 30D, the penultimate landscape lens is the Canon 10-22....

I do like my 10-20, but the 17-40 has to take the King of Landscape in my bag- it's colour and sharpness is awesome.

I personally have the 24-70 on the camera most of the time, but that's a FF sensor and may influence your decision. Another nice one is the 24-105.

IMHO and personally, I would disagree with the 10-22. To be honest, it's one of my favorite lenses on a 1.6 sensor. But the problem with that lens is that toward the bottom of the FF range it produces that abstract, warping wide-angle appearance. While this looks nice on some subjects, for general purposes you might not want that ultra-wide warping effect in all your landscapes.

100% agree with Bryan.

Also I like the results I get from the Sigma 18-50 2.8

Here is a good read (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/composition-3.shtml) that may help from one of the most successful landscape photographers in the U.S. (I hope Santa brings you your present! :D )

+1 on the Sigma 18-50 f2.8. Amazing for the price.

For what I shoot I tend to not go too wide. I call myself an intimate landscape shooter, meaning I like to take a wide angle of the area then fix my interest in on many different subjects within the whole scene. I tend to shoot my landscapes with a 24 and the 100 macro. My widest right now is only 24 (the 2.8 prime on a crop) and rarely need wider, but I'm am wanting the 17-40 right now since the price drop and the rebates. Maybe If I'm real good santa will be extra nice. Personally I find the 10-22 too wide. I have not so good health so trying to get myself into a scene can be hard, not going so wide makes it easier.

chrissy also tell santa that b&h has free shipping on lenses right now! So since you don't live in NYS the 17-40 would be $638 to your door, brand new!

Tamron 17-50 2.8
The range is great for landscapes I thikn the 10-20 range is very limiting in terms of compositions that result in a good picture.
The Tamron is very sharp and renders great colours with good contrast and saturation those are the keys to a great landscape lens to me.

For the 1.6 body, the EF-S 17-55. I prefer it to the Tokina 11-16.

I use the Sigma 10-20 with my 40D. I really like it! The only problem is, at 10mm, it vignettes when I use my P series grads, even with the Cokin P wideangle holder. If I zoom to 12 mm it's fine, which isn't much of a problem. So far my sharpest pictures have been around the 15mm range.

I love my Sigma 10-20 too. At 20mm the wideangle distortion is gone, and mine is as sharp as a tack...

My 17-40L f/4 has given me the best results. Also have a Sigma 18-200 but haven't really taken any purposeful landscape photos with it.

ummmm...just a really silly FYI about a very common misuse of the word but, penultimate actually means next to last. Thanks to TV many understand the word to mean something is "the best" yet in reality they are saying the thing in question is next to the last item in the ordered list being referenced.

Anyway, I really like my 10-20mm Sigma for pano shots. from a distance. Up close it all depends on how much detail I want.

Exactly what I was going to say---it depends on what you're trying to convey. Anything from my 11-16 to the 70-200.

Yes, a good read. I find myself most often using my 24mm, but occasionally use longer focal lengths depending on the scene.

just picked up sigma 10-20 its amazing if you put a object such as rocks in forground the warp works to your advantage stretching the object out really drawing your eye in . whether you use it exclusively or not its a must have on a 1.6x body
