banding in the sky

any tips on ways to reduce banding and noise in the sky and clouds? I'm even getting it when I process as hdr. I'm using a 40d with 17-55 f/2.8. Do I just suck, is it lack of good post processing, any tips ? I can postsome pics in a few hours after work

I believe that what you are seeing is moire. It is due to the transition of the color being outside of the color gamut's ability to render it smoothly. I believe there are ways to fix it. Try a search here and google for moire. Also look at the bottom left of this page. There are some other threads with the same question.
